Iceweasel still refuses to work

#1 Post by khelben1979 »

My Iceweasel on my Debian Lenny system over here still refuses to work.

Any suggestions?

I previously started a thread with this some time ago and I got the answer on using the Opera web browser as an alternative. And although Opera works great, some sites which uses Java technology just don't seem to work with it and therefore I'm back where I started: getting the iceweasel web browser to work again.

Hi, I found your old Thread, please link to it next time for easier reference.

You can try to completely purge iceweasel and its configuration files from your system.

I do that with aptitude:
- in root console, run aptitude
- type 'l' (small L) to filter packages
- type 'iceweasel' in the filter-box
- remove the installed packages by pressing '_' rather than '-' to get rid of all configuration
- press 'g' twice

Also, (just to be sure) delete your .mozilla folder in home and then reinstall iceweasel.

If it still doesn't work, run the iceweasel command from terminal and post any errors please

Do not delete your .mozilla folder in home, you will loose all your bookmarks and passwords etc.
You could purge iceweasel, but the problem is probably in your profile.
Start IW with: iceweasel --safe-mode
Disable add-ons and/or go back to the default settings.
If it is in the extensions then it will probably in the "heavy" extensions or conflicting extensions.
If that does not help you can make a new profile with:
iceweasel -P
..that way you can still copy files over to the new profile.

I followed the instructions in this thread and the Iceweasel web browser are still unable to start. This is what happens when trying the safe mode parameter:

bear@81-224-174-203-o1123:~$ iceweasel --safe-mode
Segmentation fault

The 2.0 version of Firefox worked on this ppc linux system, can it be that it's broken on ppc? :-/

I doubt it's that broken; likely a conflict with config.

Try to find where it's failing with strace iceweasel > iceweasel.log

If you did purge iceweasel before a reinstall, the segmentation fault could point to a plug-in in /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins
There could be also a ~/.mozilla/plugins folder , but that is normally not used.

Not enough of the trace. What's before?

Please post the entire output of strace command. The command line suggested to you creates a file, "iceweasel.log". Please post full contents of that log - probably as an attachment.

Okay, by running the command through a text console in the X enviroment makes the whole thing crash with a segmentation fault, but it did work out better when running the command in one of the text terminals.

It is, however, unable to create this logfile. It just creates an empty file with a filesize of 0 bytes.

Any ideas on what's going wrong with this?

Try

Code: Select all

strace -o iceweasel.log iceweasel

The logfile get's too big. I can't post it in this thread. Shall I send it to someone as an attachment instead?

Have a good look at last 3-4 pages (200 lines or so). Look for words like unreadable / permission denied etc. If it is not English, most here would not be able to understand anyway.

Does gziping (gzip iceweasel.log) reduce the size to enable posting here?

Gzipping the file makes it unreadable here.

I have searched the file for unread and permission denied, but it came up empty.

I'm curious, what libraries should be installed and working in order for the Firefox/Iceweasel web browser to work correctly?
