[hint] use ubuntus xorg pakages for debian(/sid)

Postby chimaera » 2004-11-21 10:22

hi,

i just replaced my self-compiled xorg with ubuntus packages [1,2]. works like a charm. the hardest thing was to remove all the references and edits i made to get the self-compiled thing running ;).

just add the 'hoary' repository [3] to your sources.list and off you go. basically i just grepped for the appropriate packages (like 6.8.1), installed and commented out the entry in my sources.list again. you might as well use synaptic which let's you select the distribution/archive to be used quite comfortably.

btw, i use sid. please don't blame me if anything fails, crashes or explodes. only do such things if you have a descent knowledge about debian's package-management for i have no idea how compatible ubuntu and debian are. i've warned you ;)

wasnt nice on my system. it was not only more difficult to install & get running, but more unstable and I had a hard time getting xfree working again. better use the tutorial here:

btw I used cvs instead of the stable packages in the tutorial; and I got xcompmgr running (shadows and transparancy) very nice. altough its quite crash-prone :D

i think i finally got it - x.org isn't nice. shadows and transparency looks very good, but on my system x.org is buggy crap. i've tried both ways - by installing from source, and by ubuntu packages. xfree86 is still the best one for me.

aaah, xorg is less stable for sure. but the debian xfree packages are heavilly tweaked and patched, and normally xfree is no where as stable as the debian version. so as soon as debian picks up xorg, it will become stable ;-)

no, its in ubuntu, but I haven't seen any official debian packages yet. And that might still take some time, I think.

you should check the debian xfree changelog... its full of fixes. the debian-x-force does alot of work on their own (they even thought about a seperate debian-x-server!). in the latest xfree, some patches from xorg-cvs are included.

well, imho XFree86 is the single worst part of GNU/Linux, compared to other operating systems. Its good to see fresh people working on a project to replace one that has delayed innovations long enough. Xorg 6.8.0 (the work of a few months, thrown togheter just to fill the gap after most distributions dropped Xfree86) already has inovated more than Xfree86 has for the past year. I am sure the first 'real' X.org release (7.0?) will rock... more interactivity, less processor and memory use, and more features like the shadow/transparancy/xdamage extentions.

just installed the xorg packages. Works great and my frame rate almost doubled. Didn't even have to reinstall my nvidia drivers. Thanks much for the info.

I've been running it non-stop since yesterday and have yet to experience any problems. seems to be running rock solid. All I did was install all 6.8.1 packages from ubuntu and rebooted the system.
