Squeeze on Thinkpad R400 Laptop getting very hot

Postby nitinkdhiman » 2011-04-06 17:35

Hello Friends,
I have Lenovo Thinkpad R400 laptop. It has Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor with ATI Radeon 3400 series graphics card and Intel Mobility chipset series 4 Integrated graphics controller.
I have Squeeze ( stable) installed on it with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 .

My laptop gets very hot within 10 minutes whether I do any task or not. Also battery life is almost 40% as compared to Windows. I am more worried about temperature as it remains completely cool in windows.
Mostly CPU load remains around 10% and CPU spends 99.99% time at 800MHz clock. I believe heat generated is by graphics card chipset.

Following are some information about my machine

I also had radeon installed as directed on http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary?h ... roprietary)) .
Following error is reported in dmesg:

I believe heat generated is probably by graphics chipsets. Normally I had both module i915 and radeon loaded in kernel. This was resulting in slow performance of machine. Once i removed radeon, performance did increased.

I cannot remove i915 to test how radeon performs. I need help on it as well.

I will like help on keeping temprature of my laptop low. I believe heat is generated by graphics chipset. I had tried to provide required information. I welcome all comments.

One more thing to add.
I had also observed that fan speed is around 2700 rpm. I do not know how to read it in Windows!
Also battery drainage is almost constant even if i let my laptop remain idle. 60.6Wh gets empty in around 2.2 hours with no heavy duty application in play other than gnome in run. Is it normal? This is after keeping harddisk dirty write to 10minutes, no power to USB, CDROM.

I do have switchable graphics bios in laptop. I will try to disable switchable setting in BIOS.
Do anyone know which kernel version supports switchable graphics option or when in future this will be available?

I think the Linux kernel program that handles switchable graphics is called "vga-switcheroo". That term can be searched for...It appears that a kernel >= 2.6.34 is necessary, and vga-switcherwoo handles the switch by logging in and out of the X GUi. There are various kernels that will install in Squeeze that are recent enough to include the switcher.

I have looked into this before. As far as I can tell it allows you to use one or the other turning off power to the unused chip to save power. It does not switch chips mid stream depending on load to the graphics like it does in windows.

thanks for replies,
I had installed kernel 2.6.38.2.
Its running stable but not improvement in temprature.
I am hoping to play with vga-switheroo today.

About tempratures output of 'sensors' command in my first post: Are these normal or in higher brackets for a very low load like web browsing. I was using chrome on gnome with active 4-5 tabs .
