[SOLVED] Updated Squeeze to 6.0.3 RTL8111 Broken

Hi Everybody,
I am running Squeeze on an AMD64 machine that I built. The machine has dual Realtek RTL8111/r8168B gigabit LAN. I have been running this machine since Lenny came out and the LAN controllers functioned fine then all the way through the upgrade to Squeeze 6.0.2-1. On Saturday 08 October 2011 when I did the updates to Squeeze 6.0.3, my Realtek LAN stopped working and the I was unable to access the Internet. I am now posting this thread from my Windows machine. I have booted a Live CD of Squeeze 6.0.2-1 and with that, I am able to access the Internet through the Realtek NIC fine. Out of desperation, I did a reinstall using my Squeeze 6.0.0 Disc 1, which I thought would allow me to go back to 6.0.0 and not allow the update to 6.0.3 to happen. I was wrong, because as you know, the software is updated to the latest version at install. I did not try to install with the network cable unplugged, because after I thought about it, that would not fix the problem, but just put me back to Squeeze 6.0.2-1.

To rule out network cabling problems, I unplugged the network cable from my Windows Machine and plugged it into the Linux box. I can access the Internet though both cables from the Windows Machine, and can not access the Internet with either cable from the Linux box.

I have turned off eth1 in the BIOS for troubleshooting. eth0 is the one that shows up in lspci. I am plugged into the right LAN controller, because I did a reinstall of Squeeze with eth1 turned off and debian installer contacted the mirror OK.

I'm using the r1869 driver in the kernel (which functioned correctly in Lenny and up through Squeeze 6.0.2-1)

I know from reading the changelog for squeeze that the kernel and the r8169 driver have been updated. I have tried running with and without the r8169 firmware and neither case allows me to access the Internet.

I'd be grateful to anyone who is willing to take a look at this and help me get back on line.

What happens if you try
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 up
Replacing the ip address with whatever...
I'm asking because it seems the interface is up, but there is no ip address (maybe cannot get ip from dhcp?)

I had a slightly different problem with a Realtek chip. New 6.0.3 install and firmware was missing. I needed to extract it from a package and stick on on USB to get the installer going - and the firmware was 2KB:

Look through that.

I did a:

and the ip gets assigned, but even after putting my ISP's nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf and restarting networking with:

I can't get out to the Internet. Good though though. Thank You.

I loaded firmware-linux-nonfree_0.28+squeeze1_all.deb, firmware-linux-free_2.6.32-38_all.deb and firmware-realtek_0.28+squeeze1_all.deb with commands like:

Which seems to be suggesting that my DHCP server ( 2Wire router) is out of leases. But my DHCP pool is sufficiently large (IPs of x.x.x.33 to x.x.x.250) and I currently have only 2 to 3 machines on dhcp, so there should be plenty of leases left. Thanks for the suggestion Peter. Could this possibly be an issue with the isc dhcp client 4.1.1-P1? Is anyone else having a problem with this client?

I thank you again for helping me and please post here again if you have any more ideas for me to try. In the meantime, I'll continue to read forums etc. to see if I can find an answer. If I get it working, I'll definitely post the solution here.

Try copying the kernel from the live cd to the installation disk on the
/boot
folder (but don't overwrite the old one) and run
update-grub
Try to reboot with the new kernel (from the grub menu) and test the network adapter.

Your suggestion to copy the kernel from the live cd to my /boot partition and update-grub worked! Thanks a lot. I must admit, I'm glad to know what the problem is, although I don't understand what's wrong with the stock kernel. More importantly, should I recompile a kernel or continue to use the live cd one? If I need to recompile the kernel, how do I go about doing that?

Glad it's sort of working now.
You can keep the live kernel if it has support for all the hardware and functions you need.
Problems maybe related to:
1. Config file for the kernel
2. Drivers
3. Modules (broken, loaded or not loaded)
4. Incompatibilities
5. Bugs in the kernel
If you are happy with the system now, no need to re-compile. If you decide to do so, there are plenty of tutorials around (beyond the scope of the hardware forum).
After you are persuaded that everything works as intended, please, remember to update the subject as [SOLVED].
