[solved] gdm 3.4.1-2 not starting desktops in Wheezy

Postby michapma » 2012-09-05 09:52

I've an interesting problem on my machine at work, which is running Wheezy with 3.0.0.1-686-pae. (Dunno why it hasn't upgraded to 3.2.0-3.) As I recall, it was after an update, shortly before I left for a trip, that gdm3 stopped letting me into the desktop. I've just booted and run aptitude update and full-upgrade from the VT, so I'm up to date.

gdm3 starts, so it's not likely a video driver issue (running on an onboard Intel chip). Once I enter the user and password, the following happens in quick sequence: screen goes black with cursor on upper left, then black with watch icon, then back to the gdm3 login screen. It doesn't matter whether I select Gnome or XFCE, neither starts. I can login to the user account on the VT, so the user account is valid.

dmesg output doesn't show anything interesting, and I didn't find anything suspect in /var/log/Xorg.0.log or in the messages or boot log files.

In /var/log/gdm3/:0.log it speaks early in the file of
Code: Select all
FATAL: Module fbcon not found
(WW) Falling back to old proble method for vesa
(WW) Falling back to old proble method for fbdev
(II) Loding /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libfbdevhw.so

Toward the end of the file, it mentions xkbcomp warnings (and that errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server), as well as
Code: Select all
(II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

In /var/log/syslog there's a lot regarding gnome-session. I'm pasting what I think is the relevant oart below (attaching doesn't work, code continued in next post) in hopes that someone can help me isolate whatever's keeping me out. I'd be happy to gather any more info I haven't thought of. Any ideas?

Re: gdm3 not starting desktops (gnome-session error?)

Postby emariz » 2012-09-05 17:45

Read the package manager's log in /var/log and make sure that no relevant package was removed during the update previous to the first appearance of the issue.
To rule out a configuration problem, you could create a new user and see if you can load a desktop environment with it.

Oh!, and the kernel was not upgraded because you did not install a meta-package to track new versions. For example, I use linux-image-amd64.

Some excellent suggestions.

Below are three transactions listed in /var/log/apt/ from the day the issue started. The last transaction is me reinstalling gdm3 in a first effort to correct; it was the transaction before that where the issue first manifested.

Good idea, I created a testing account and gave the login credentials to gdm3, but got the same response.

Based on all this, I expect that removing or reinstalling the packages listed above might resolve the problem. Although it might not help me learn much, at least I'd have a desktop back. I'll check back after.

emariz wrote:Oh!, and the kernel was not upgraded because you did not install a meta-package to track new versions. For example, I use linux-image-amd64.

Thanks! I knew it was something like that, but couldn't remember off the top how it actually worked. Pretty sure I used default settings when installing this machine, so not sure why a meta-package wasn't used.

Re: gdm3 not starting desktops (gnome-session error?)

Postby michapma » 2012-09-06 12:26

I've upgraded and am running the newer kernel (3.2.0-3-686-pae).

I tinkered around with reinstalling several of the above-listed packages without success. I decided I've better things to work on and tried a brute-force approach from the VT:
Code: Select all
# aptitude remove ~ngnome.*
This removed 197 packages.

Next I reinstalled with
Code: Select all
aptitude install gnome --with-recommends
This installed 202 packages. Finally, I started gdm3 back up with
Code: Select all
invoke-rc.d gdm3 start
gdm3 obliged, I signed in, and, to my surprise, got the same behavior as before.

Now, if there's a configuration error, I'm sure that purging the packages and reinstalling would give it a better chance of working; however, I think it might really be worthwhile troubleshooting. It's just that I'm just running out of ideas of where to look. I've tried googling key words with some of the more promising-looking gnome-session errors above (e.g., "GsmShell: Not connected to the shell"), but it hasn't helped much.

Any further ideas where I can check?

Re: gdm3 not starting desktops (gnome-session error?)

Postby michapma » 2012-09-06 13:38

I still haven't fixed the problem, but I've found a workaround and isolated the problem somewhat. I did an aptitude purge gdm3 from single-user, which also removed the gnome and gnome-core meta-packages. I then reinstalled the gnome meta-package, which of course pulled in gnome-core and gdm3. The problem persisted.

In the next step, I purged gdm3 and installed lightdm. Lightdm started both XFCE and Gnome-shell sessions. I reinstalled gdm3, but it still won't start a session. So my workaround is to use lightdm as the default. It would seem that gdm3 is somehow responsible for the problem.

So I'm still interested in troubleshooting gdm3, if anyone has an idea.

Re: gdm 3.4.1-2 not starting desktops in Wheezy

Postby s0ygecko » 2012-09-08 04:28

I know another workaround...you need to have installed the xinit package and before stoping gdm3 service you log into the user and execute
Code: Select all
xinit gnome-session
. I was using it to login for six month in sid. just don't close the xterm window and all will work as expected but you can't use root privileged tools.

I can't trace what is wrong with gdm3 but apparently it can't get session data.

s0ygecko, thank you for joining the boards just to post that workaround. For me, however, not being able to use root-privileged tools is too much of a drawback. I'd rather just use lightdm.

It's still been bothering me though, since gdm3 should work and the lightdm doesn't match up with the look-and-feel of gnome shell. I looked at the following bug report: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=598377

I tried the approach in Message #30 and then in Message #35 (even doing the purging and reinstallation in single-user mode, as during the purge it announced that Debian-gdm was in use by the dbus-daemon process, which I don't understand), but the behavior after logging in with gdm3 didn't change.

In Message #40 Malaterre mentions, "I realized the info is actually located in $HOME/.xsession-errors." I hadn't seen this before, so here's my current output. The time corresponds to a recent login attempt via gdm3, though the four warning entries at the end showed up after having logged into gnome shell via lightdm; I'm having to reconsider the possibility of a configuration error, even though logging on with a new user account previously didn't change the behavior.

Can anyone make sense of the warnings and whether that causes the gnome shell login via gdm3 to stop?

Re: gdm 3.4.1-2 not starting desktops in Wheezy

Postby michapma » 2013-02-18 17:32

I'd like to be a bit more precise, as the content of ~/.xsession-errors changes dynamically. I restarted the machine with gdm3 as the login manager and then dropped to the VT (Ctrl+Alt+F1) with root privileges and opened /home/mike/.xsession-errors.

Here then is the content upon restart into gdm3 without any login attempt via gdm3 (leftover from the previous session, I suppose):

Then I went back to gdm3 and tried to log in. It failed as before, meaning the screen briefly went black and then showed me the gdm3 login screen again, which was expected. Then I dropped back to the VT and looked at the content of /home/mike/.xsession-errors again. This was the result:
Code: Select all

Finally, I used
Code: Select all
#invoke-rc.d gdm3 stop
# dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 # chose lightdm as default
# invoke-rc.d lightdm start

to get the lightdm prompt, and logged in. Once the desktop was up, I dropped back to VT and looked at /home/mike/.xsession-errors again, and got this:

Re: gdm 3.4.1-2 not starting desktops in Wheezy

Postby michapma » 2013-08-16 14:31

I wasn't able to resolve this issue through ingenuity or effort, and have been using lightdm since February on this particular machine. Yesterday I installed KDE and today KDM, and on a lark switched GDM3 back as the default DM. It launched KDE and then Gnome3 without complaint.

Serendipity saves the day, marking thread as solved. :roll:

Re: [solved] gdm 3.4.1-2 not starting desktops in Wheezy

Hi,

i recently installed debian jessie version, after installing my additional scripts and environment which used to work fine on wheezy i got the same weird behavior.

gdm login just fail, and send me back to the user login.

digging a bit into what i already know as the error place , i.e. ~/.xsession-errors i found something which look resemble to the problem reported previously in the post.

Code: Select all
/etc/gdm3/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/gdm3/Xsession: 203: /etc/profile_addons: Syntax error: "(" unexpected (expecting "}")

after more digging, found that the problem reported here about the bash_completion is not exists anymore in jessie.
i went looking how bash_completeion is working in my machine.
i found some weird (which i didnt really investigated too much) wrapper which invoke the bash_completeion.

it appear that the issues relate to the invocation of the script .

dig into /etc/profile i found this:
Code: Select all
...
if [ -d /etc/profile.d ]; then
  for i in /etc/profile.d/*.sh; do
    if [ -r $i ]; then
      . $i
    fi
  done
  unset i
fi
...

and in that location found /etc/profile.d/bash_completion.sh which looked like this

Code: Select all
# Check for interactive bash and that we haven't already been sourced.
[ -z "$BASH_VERSION" -o -z "$PS1" -o -n "$BASH_COMPLETION_COMPAT_DIR" ] && return

# Check for recent enough version of bash.
bash=${BASH_VERSION%.*}; bmajor=${bash%.*}; bminor=${bash#*.}
if [ $bmajor -gt 4 ] || [ $bmajor -eq 4 -a $bminor -ge 1 ]; then
    [ -r "${XDG_CONFIG_HOME:-$HOME/.config}/bash_completion" ] && \
        . "${XDG_CONFIG_HOME:-$HOME/.config}/bash_completion"
    if shopt -q progcomp && [ -r /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion ]; then
        # Source completion code.
        . /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion
    fi
fi
unset bash bmajor bminor

so i just did the same and mimc this wrapper model for my script :

i added /etc/profile.d/bash_addon.sh and fixed it a bit ... to look like this :

Code: Select all
# Check for interactive bash and that we haven't already been sourced.
[ -z "$BASH_VERSION" -o -z "$PS1" -o -n "$BASH_COMPLETION_COMPAT_DIR" ] && return

# Check for recent enough version of bash.
bash=${BASH_VERSION%.*}; bmajor=${bash%.*}; bminor=${bash#*.}
if [ $bmajor -gt 4 ] || [ $bmajor -eq 4 -a $bminor -ge 1 ]; then
    if shopt -q progcomp && [ -r /etc/profile_addon ]; then
        # Source extra profile .
        . /etc/profile_addon
    fi
fi
unset bash bmajor bminor

and life been good after an hour and a half of frustration ....

hope this will help to someone
g'luck

!!!

You did it!

Thank you, bugmenot0!

I just ran into this behavior on a new install on yet another machine. This sent me again searching for errors in /var/log/gdm3/:0-greeter.log. There I found such lines as
Code: Select all
gdm-simple-greeter[4716]: CRITICAL: get_column_number: assertion `i < gtk_tree_view_get_n_columns (treeview)' failed
gdm-simple-greeter[4716]: CRITICAL: get_column_number: assertion `i < gtk_tree_view_get_n_columns (treeview)' failed
gdm-simple-greeter[4716]: GLib-GIO-WARNING: Dropping signal ActiveSessionChanged of type (s) since the type from the expected interface is (o)

I also looked in /home/user/.xsession-errors, and remember seeing that part of the error in one of the lines:
Code: Select all
Syntax error: "(" unexpected (expecting "}")
I didn’t expect this to be any big deal, until I came back to this thread and read your post. I recalled that one of the changes I made when starting to set up the machine yesterday was to enable bash completion globally:

http://oitibs.com/debian-wheezy-bash-completion/
http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-add-ba ... -in-debian

I had entered the following lines into /etc/profile:
Code: Select all
if [ -f /etc/bash_completion ]; then
 . /etc/bash_completion
fi

Removing these lines from /etc/profile allowed gdm3 to successfully start Gnome Shell again. :mrgreen:

I’m fairly confident that on the machine described at the beginning of this thread, it was also changes to /etc/profile that caused the failed logins. In my opinion, the behavior of gdm3 to loop back without an error message qualifies as a bug. One of these days I have to learn how to actually file the things. Now I want to figure out how to enable bash completion globally without resurrecting this behavior, but that’s for a different thread.
