All-In-One Printer

Getting your soundcard to work, using Debian on non-i386 hardware, etc

When using the Make & Model window and choose it, and running the printer, I get this error:

"Filter "brlpdwrapperMFC5440CN" for printer "MFC5440CN" not available: No such file or directory".

Please clarify. You say: "No it doesn't show up in the Make window." But, then next sentence says: "When using the Make & Model window and choose it,...". Which Make & Model window are you using to choose the Brother printer?

Good luck, jimbo

Sorry. When it goes to the Make/Manufacturer and below it is the Make window to choose Make; HP, Epson, Dymo, Raw & Zebra is all listed. Or I can provide the PPD file, which I choose from /user/cups/model.

If I choose it from PPD file, the error message, "Filter "brlpdwrapperMFC5440CN" for printer "MFC5440CN" not available: No such file or directory".

Thnx.

Ok, and that file was the one deleted during your last driver installation. I am running out of ideas. I would delete the printer. Then I would remove the driver package, including any configuration files. Then reboot. Then install the driver package again. Then use CUPS to install the printer from scratch. If that doesn't work, I am out of ideas. Maybe I will go to the Brother web site and see what I can learn there.

Good luck, jimbo

ghostdawg: I notice on the Brother web site for drivers it says you must install TWO "drivers". First an "LPR driver", then the "wrapper". Did you install the LPR driver?

Yes I did install both drivers and I was in the c-shell environment when I did it.

I've been playing around with it some more and choosing HP drivers as mention earlier, and now when I try to print, everything seems to be working except nothing ever print to paper.

I remember when I was first buying this printer I found some info on Ubuntu's website or one related, and someone had a nice write up on a similar brothers printer aio...I can't seem to find it now.

I'm currently at work till 6am CST USA.

***UPDATE***

I found the Ubuntu forum's topic about Brothers printers and some say need to create a directory before installing the drivers.

mkdir /var/spool/lpd

So, I'll give this a try and see what happens.

That sounds like a lead. I hope it works. Your problem definitely seems like a driver or path issue.

Good luck, jimbo

I just got the printer to work on Ubuntu Edgy. Took me a couple hours!

I had to:
sudo mkdir /var/spool/lpd
sudo dpkg -i --force-all mfc5440cnlpr-1.0.2-1.i386.deb
sudo apt-get install csh
sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/cupsys /etc/init.d/cups
sudo dpkg -i --force-all cupswrappermfc5440cn_1.0.0-1_i386.deb
Then opened http://localhost:631, "Manager Printers"
Should see the MFC5440CN printer, click "Modify Printer"
Device is "AppSocket/HP JetDirect"
Device URI is "socket://192.168.15.102" (printer IP)
Provide PPD file from /usr/share/cups/model/brmfc5440cn_cups.ppd

It works now (I was ready to give up on it already).

Congratulations! What a lot of work to get the driver installed properly.

Thanks for the update, jimbo

I tried the above and I think it could use a couple of additions as for one thing Brother has the files in caps and lowercase now and case I think is important. Also another directory needs to be made before CUPs will install.

Brother site http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/
If the following doesn't work it probably means 1 of the items from the following site was overlooked
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/ ... stall.html

Brother MFC 5440CN drivers download from here
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/ ... stall.html
They don't seem to be found when downloaded to desktop - they seem to need to be copied to the Root of the usr directory to be found during install.

1. "sudo aa-complain cupsd" command is required before the installation.
2. "sudo mkdir /usr/share/cups/model" command is required before the installation.
sudo mkdir /var/spool/lpd

sudo dpkg -i --force-all mfc5440cnlpr-1.0.2-1.i386.deb (check and correct file name to current download)
sudo apt-get install csh
sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/cupsys /etc/init.d/cups
sudo dpkg -i --force-all cupswrappermfc5440cn_1.0.0-1_i386.deb (this file spelling has changed - correct it to your downloaded file.)
Then opened http://localhost:631, "Manager Printers"
Should see the MFC5440CN printer, click "Modify Printer"
Device is "AppSocket/HP JetDirect"
Device URI is "socket://192.168.15.102" (Adjust to match your printer IP)
Provide PPD file from /usr/share/cups/model/brmfc5440cn_cups.ppd

Hope the additions make it easier for you - I suspect Brothers changed the names since this was 1st published, also adding the directory was essential.

I still have to thank you for the how to as without it I probably never would have got it, as it was it took me 3 hours. Seeing that Printer Test page pop out in Postscript 3 made my day.
