Re: How long do you leave your system running?
One of my laptops has 187 days of uptime, the other only has 11 since I had to shut it down to install a bluetooth module. My desktop was around 300 days before I moved a couple weeks ago.... Rebooting is a waste of time

Re: How long do you leave your system running?
I haven't posted in this thread since 2007, oh my, why did it come back to life... Speaking of uptime, this thread is winning.

Re: Desktop Enviroment choice
A few weeks ago I installed almost every common desktop environment in a virtual machine in my constant battle to get away from MATE (I don't have a slow internet connection :D ). LXDE is probably going to be my choice if/when I ever manage in making the switch. Honestly the only reason I use MATE i...

Re: PCM2902 Audio Codec only works on MONO
Can you say what kernels the two machines are on and what kernel modules are loaded? Are you using Pulseaudio or only alsa? Kernel is listed at the bottom of the OP. I'm using pulseaudio, I will also note that this card (I have two (they both exhibit the same issue)) works perfectly fine on a raspb...

PCM2902 Audio Codec only works on MONO
I have a PCM2902 Audio Codec USB sound card that only works with mono on my desktop, but works perfectly fine with stereo input/output on my laptops. I've had this USB sound card for probably 10 years and never had an issue on linux until plugging it into my desktop today. Laptop and desktop are bot...

nvidia driver issues
Running debian testing with an nvidia geforce 210. This is its line from lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT216 [GeForce 210] (rev a1) For a couple months I've had to run the nouveau driver because the nvidia driver (340.98) won't work. Same issue installing it the "...

Re: Nvidia driver problem - Debian 8.4 (Xfce) - 32 bit
I've been having the same issue on stretch on my desktop with an nvidia 210. Couple weeks ago I upgraded and no more working nvidia 340 driver. I've tried installing the driver the "debian way", from nvidia, compiling an older kernel that I know used to work with the nvidia driver. Made su...

Re: Caja crashes after updates [Testing/Stretch]
Oh.... durp. I was thinking pinning cross releases (like stable/testing) not just packages. Of course the older packages aren't available without manually downloading them.

Re: Caja crashes after updates [Testing/Stretch]
For some reason I can't get it to downgrade to the pinned packages, even with a priority of over 1000... weird.

Re: Caja crashes after updates [Testing/Stretch]
I came here to look for a solution to this very issue. Bummer, I've tried a bunch of different themes and whatnot, no dice. A lot of applications are giving theme warnings, but everything besides caja seems to work. Out of all the programs to lose, caja is fairly benign. I do most things on the comm...

Re: Long distance network connection options
I have done this about 9 years ago: Using a Linksys wrt54gl router flashed with ddwrt software, and a surplus RCA receive sat. dish turned upside down. I made up a cantenna (waveguide) as a feed horn, and located it at the focal point of the dish. Using about 20 feet of LMR600 coax and a reverse tn...

Re: Long distance network connection options
I've done about 2000 feet over buried ethernet cable (outside grade, shielded, whatever), and that's pushing it. It's slow and doesn't always work great. That's why I'm looking into other solutions. Digging a trench in the woods isn't a whole lot of fun, yea... But it's not terrible, either. Takes t...

Re: Long distance network connection options
It uses the word "waveguide", getting flashbacks from that electromagnitism course. Interesting idea. Not sure it'll work through the woods, but I'll look into it.

Long distance network connection options
I have a small house on the lake across the road from the house I live in, it's about 2500 feet through the woods. I was wondering what would be the best way to get a network connection that distance. I don't care about high speed, 5mbps or so would be plenty for using the internet and watching secu...

Re: Nvidia driver causing black screen
I've done some reading, and WOW, a lot has changed in Debian since I lasted updated... I've been so used to the way it worked in the days of yore. This is going to be quite the learning curve on doing low level stuff, writing my own init scripts, etc. I'm not sure systemd is a bad thing, but I can't...

Nvidia driver causing black screen
I have a system running a fairly new copy of Stretch. I have an nvidia Geforce 210 (on my desktop) VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT216 [GeForce 210] (rev a1) Previously running Squeeze I was using the proprietary driver and never had any issues. Now using the nouveau driver video pla...

Going to have to shut them down as the room UPS is being replaced, unless I can figure some wa...

Re: Disable sound for one specific application.
I don't know, but 1st try run it from that user which is not in group "audio". Peter. I have to say I was skeptical about this suggestion. But after some thought, there's some genius in simplicity there. Gave it a go, and what do you know, it worked! Thanks for that. It's easy enough to j...

Disable sound for one specific application.
I've been searching and searching, but I can't find the answer to this. I have a program that doesn't really need sound, but it has sound effects. It's an older oss program and it causes issues with crashing. I've tried aoss, and whatever the other oss wrapper is, and neither will make it work prope...
