Well, glad to see that everyone's as helpful as ever. ;) Solved it. For some odd reason /var/tmp/ must be writable by the user that launches the X server. Once I set /var/tmp/ to writable (and I think I may have set something else in /var/ as well, can't remember now), everything works. Anyhow, happ...

Problem with CTRL-ALT-F[n]/virtual consoles, and apt-get . .

Well, hello again, all. It's been a while. I'm having some minor problems after having upgraded to using ext4. After I converted my partitions to ext4, I copied everything back over from my backup. However, since I was tired and not thinking straight (worst thing possible before this kind of operati...

No sound coming out of Rosegarden . . .

Well, after wangling with this for, what, six weeks now? I decided to "get smart" and ask about this . . . I'm trying to run Rosegarden and hopefully try it, one day. I've compiled a RT kernel (I don't get warned about that on startup). I've gotten some soundfonts for fluidsynth (from the ...

KPowerSave has some power-saving options, but if you have ACPI, check out the contents of /proc/acpi/battery/BAT<insert battery number here>/*. The contents of that directory include your current power draw, battery capacity (mAh), battery percentage, battery health, etc. Force your cpu speed down b...

Not certain about the realtek wireless network cards; but I know that some WN cards have firmware that you can update. It's yet another wild shot, but have you tried updating/reflashing that firmware?

Are you running an amd64 installation or a i386 installation?

I seem to remember getting that error message when I tried to run a ELF-32 executable (32-bit standard linux executable) on an amd64 system.

Testing is probably the best for desktop computers; Stable is best for servers. The software in Stable is pretty old by the time it gets there.

Lenny usually gives me uptimes of 10 days or so. Perfectly acceptable for a desktop machine.

uname -a tells me:

Code: Select all

Linux cedar 2.6.26-1-amd64 #1 SMP Wed Sep 10 15:31:12 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
It may be an amd64 problem . . .

I'll try a non-debian kernel.

Whenever I *try* to reproduce the error, I can't. As soon as I stop trying, it reappears.

rafkig, you have any success in figuring out *when* the problem starts?

I get the error "Cannot open default font 'fixed'" when I try to reproduce my error.

I do not see that message in your log.

When I install xfonts-base, I get no error messages.

Post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, please.

This is only a matter of style and taste. The all important aspect is readability. The programming code should always be easily readable although I have seen programming code using a disproportionate number of leading and trailing undescores. In my opinion, leading and trailing underscores should b...

Run dpkg-reconfigure xfonts-base. I seem to remember that helping when I had this problem.

I'll be offline for a few minutes, installing Debian into a virtual machine, seeing if I can reproduce the problem I had.

What it means is that you don't have 3D acceleration. Nothing to worry about at this stage.

I don't see anything else in that log . . . is the entire log posted? There's a 64K limit to posts on this forum . . .

Not really; none that I know of.

You may be better off with an iptables interface like guarddog. I vastly prefer the GUI of guarddog to firestarter.

Better yet, learn the iptables syntax and use the command-line directly.

Dropped packets galore

This is *really* bugging me ATM. I connect to a wired network, and I start getting lots of dropped packets. It only appeared after I upgraded to a 2.6.26 kernel.

It may have been lurking around, waiting to be discovered . . . and I never noticed it.

Any suggestions, people? Anyone else have this problem?
