Re: Kernel 3.14 fails to boot
It is wise to have two kernels in your system, the last good one and the newest. That leaves a backup for when things go wrong. Oh yes! That was how I managed to get in, in order to search to web to find the answer ;-) I like to have "GRUB_TIMEOUT=5" in /etc/default/grub so that it is the...

Kernel 3.14 fails to boot
Over the weekend the kernel for Jessie was updated from 3.13 to 3.14. Unfortunately, it fails to boot on some hardware. It hangs after putting out the line :- Booting the kernel. Our friends at ArchLinux have reported this :- https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/39811 and it seems to have been reported t...

Re: Jessie update removes Flightgear
I see that Flightgear 3.0.0 has now made it into testing and does indeed install and does appear to run. I haven't yet had time to check it properly.

Re: [Solved] Sound problems after Jessie update
VLC contd Further to my comments at the top about selecting the audio card in VLC to get it to work properly, I found another problem in that area. It is described at https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=116122 Whereby setting the volume control to anything other than 100% (either lo...

Re: Sound problems after Jessie update
Thank you again. As you say, "the ever-helpful Arch wiki" https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture was most helpful, and I spotted the bit :- If both devices use the same module then we can use the *enable* parameter from snd-hda-intel module, it's an array of...

Re: Sound problems after Jessie update
Thank you for that. Getting the right card to be card 0 does make sense. I have tried the lines which you suggest, but to no avail. I think that the main problem is that the PCH anad HDMI cards are both using the same snd-hda-intel module. # cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [MID ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel MID...

[Solved] Sound problems after Jessie update
After recent updates to Jessie (around Christmas 2013) I have experienced growing problems with sound. The first thing which I noticed was that VLC produced severe distortion, which I would describe, perhaps, as sounding like Donald Duck. The later problem was that I lost sound when I tried to acces...

Re: Logitech wireless mouse not working on 64 bit Jessie
There have been a few updates and I am now on kernel 3.12-1-amd64, so I thought that I should check whether my Logitech mouse was now working, and am happy to report that it is now working.

Re: Xen - Could not find bridge device
This is in fact bug 718898
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=718898
and they are going to use 'awk' instead of 'cut', as the fix.
I have not yet seen this update on Jessie.

Code: Select all

Re: Upgrade to Xen 4.3 no longer boots DomU
Summary When Xen updates from 4.1 to 4.3, booting up an DomU no longer works for 2 reasons. The 'xm' commands have been replaced by the 'xl' commands as the default toolstack. See :- http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_4.2_Release_Notes It is necessary to edit /etc/default/xen and add 'xl' to give ...

Re: Upgrade to Xen 4.3 no longer boots DomU
Having a look in /usr/bin, there are a number of qemu-system-* which cater for a number of different architectures. It took a few moments to realise that these are all binaries for my architecture, but are emulating the architecture in the name! There is also /usr/bin/qemu which is a link via /etc/a...

Re: Upgrade to Xen 4.3 no longer boots DomU
While the above options allowed DomU to boot, I could not get VNC to run. I therefore tried the following options, which not only allowed DomU to boot, but also allowed VNC to run. I had already installed 'qemu' and found that the binaries were in /usr/bin rather than in /usr/lib/xen-4.?/bin/ device...

Re: Upgrade to Xen 4.3 no longer boots DomU
Having read the bug report more carefully, I have now edited the cfg file for the DomU, /etc/xen/jessie.cfg in my case, and have added the following lines :- device_model_version = "qemu-xen-traditional" device_model_override="/usr/lib/xen-4.1/bin/qemu-dm" I can now boot my DomU ...

...searching for three letter words does not work simply. Then you're busily trying to solve the wrong problem. Learn how to do a site-specific search in your favorite search engine. I suspect that you are correct on the general point about splitting stuff up. It is a bit more tricky here as searching for three letter words does not work simply.

I wonder whether it would be worth creating a new category for the discussion of problems with virtual machines as it is not obvious which of the current categories is the best location for these problems. Also, it may be that these problems are rather specialist, not affecting other people. There m...
