Re: Video choppy regression? Nvidia? on stable
Thanks for the reminder; that synaptic has an easy history viewer. I did not try any backports at first; when trying to get AMB 6670 GPU microcode to work, with all the suggestions I could find. Then afterwards; I finally tried the buster-backport firmware, driver and then even 5.0 kernel. I may soo...

Re: Nouveau - works in Stretch, not in Buster
@dajames Well you could go back to Debian 9 stretch, with the nvidia-304 proprietary driver (made easy by sgfxi) but oldstable and lack of Nvidia-304 driver upgrades will get old fast. And Nouveau is worse. Open driver GPU is the way to go. And with low needs perhaps an AMD giveaway card (under $50 ...

Re: Nouveau - works in Stretch, not in Buster
1. Thanks for those trying to help. In the end I could not find why my Radeon (I replaced the Debian 10 unsupported Nvidia-304 driver, nor Nouveau working card with AMD HD 6670 w/OPEN DRIVERS) yet the microcode didn't load (TURKS) in Debian 10, on MY MAIN WORK STATION (Since 2012, Debian 6 on this o...

Re: Video choppy regression? Nvidia? on stable
I never had nouveau stay working; so until now (year +) used the nividia-304 non-free driver. I was noting in this thread; going back to older backed up system played 1080p vids well. So it was software. For the past year I had some success using different players; but occasional overheat protection...

Re: Nouveau - works in Stretch, not in Buster
But I can not verify the microcode is loading. I do not think they loaded. How do I fix that???? Mint 19.2 = dmesg | grep -E 'drm|radeon' | grep -iE 'firmware|microcode' Shows: [ 1.660912] [drm] Loading TURKS Microcode Debian 10 = dmesg | grep -E 'drm|radeon' | grep -iE 'firmware|microcode' Shows: <...

Thanks very much. It says... Kernel modules: radeon. Re: Nouveau - works in Stretch, not in Buster
Thanks; but oh no. I compare heavily; but to be sure then what is the best way to verify it's not trying VESA (because VESA worked at low res, fallback). It (Mint 19.2) does not have a xorg.conf file. It has radeonfb blacklisted, and I tried (deb 10) as not blacklisted. I also tried the normally all...

Re: Nouveau - works in Stretch, not in Buster
My main system had a Nividia built-in (used for years) and I had a similar "304" class PCI-E Nvidia used instead in the slot, for it's DVI out adapted to TV with only HDMI. Now I find an old AMD HD6670 (TURKS XT) with HDMI, and is not bad after-all; automagically in only Mint 19.2. (I made...

Re: Nouveau - works in Stretch, not in Buster
I've followed this out to Debian dropped the 304 driver now at Debian 10; meaning it will never work (nvidia non-free) in Debian 10 Buster, due to xorg 1.20 leaving it behind. Thoughts of switching to OLDER Mint or it's pattern OLDER Ubuntu (after their Debian sid derived past) is actually having th...

I got Nouveau working link above. But then nouveau was far to unstable. More at link above.
If Nouveau works well over time then great. It just hasn't been even as good; historically. Tested as poor.

Re: Nouveau - works in Stretch, not in Buster
TESTING BELOW INSTRUCTIONS: The damn thing will not boot to GUI. Just tried 6 times. Didn't change anything. Ugly graphics and now waiting long periods of time often does nothing, or just shows a cursor. The two times I did get it to boot it ran video well. But then EVERYTHING but the cursor movemen...

Re: Nvidia drivers install Debian 10
Let me be clear: Debian (10) just allowed numerous computers with legacy nvidia GPU's to fail BEFORE their time. Because Nvidia stopped support and refuses to go open. However; so what? Why HELP Nvidia obsolete them? Why should we also stop supporting GPU's that are working? Either work with the las...

Re: Nvidia drivers install Debian 10
The wiki does not even include Debian 10. [To this date Sept 7, 2019]
AND IT SAYS NOTHING ABOUT NVIDIA 304 CAN'T WORK WITH DEBIAN 10.
And stuttering Nouveau (this date) isn't even working either.
DO NOT release tier upgrade to Debian 10 buster on your main systems where Nvidia 304 is desired.

Re: Nouveau - works in Stretch, not in Buster
DO NOT UPGRADE to Debian 10 Buster stable on your main systems; If you want the proprietary Nvidia 304 driver. Not compatible xorg etc.. (Where were the NVIDIA GPU warnings or 'time shift', Deb 9 restore abilities? Now, I have to migrate, many years, out of my fully upgraded Debian 10 non-working s...

Re: Buster so far....
Best wishes all! Any new releases hard work and preparation is not equal to the world testing it for a month or more; first. Even with Debian. Especially others not Debian (3 months minimum or more)? Maybe the point release after and of Debian 10 would then be the earliest; that a non testing/report...

Video choppy regression? Nvidia? on stable
First of all I will never buy another Nvidia card. But I don't know if end of line for the 304 driver is related. I have four computers that utilize the Nvidia 304 driver on their similar cards. Every damn one of them started stuttering and play video choppy. Especially 1080; but also 720 movies. No...

Re: Serious new problem with debian 9 and nvidia driver
I just found your post. I'm not sure where you should go next; but great job getting this far! Never give up. If you require even better stability you could punt back to Debian 8.8 (via live and installer for KDE if you want) for a month or so. Especially if you have stable work to do. A lot of good...
