Re: Need help configuring dual monitors

FWIW, I just booted this machine from a live Kubuntu DVD (16.04) and it came right up with the desktop extended to both monitors. The screen positions were reversed relative to each other, however. That took a whole 20 seconds to correct. This, it would seem, rules out any hardware or BIOS issues. ...

Re: Wifi configuration problem when installing Debian on Mac

Hey steve, I've got both a good news and a bad news. good news: The package you provided worked! I loaded it from a USB during the installation, and I successfully connected to my wifi and configured the network mirror, and the installation finished without giving me a single error message! bad new...

Re: Debian update caused major breakage in my workflow regar

The trolls are at large here it seems :) It is really really hard to break debian to an unfixable state. I have not reinstalled since i first installed woody ~17 years ago, using hundreds of 3-rd party packages, even mixing sid and testing at some point (never go sid if you intent to go back to sta...

Re: Debian Stretch AMDGPU-PRO doesn't work

Just in case you haven't been keeping up to date, in the majority of cases the free drivers now out perform the closed source ones, the main exception being Vulkan. Check phoronix.com for some benchies, unless you have a specific thing you want the PRO drivers for I suspect you may decide you don't ...

Re: suspend on Mac Mini (late 2009 model) shows blank screen

Have you tried the usual method of installing pm-utils and using pm-suspend? systemd I believe also as a suspend command, you could try that too. s2ram I haven't heard of all that often, I think it's less common. If that doesn't work try a backported kernel, although given the age of the machine I k...

Re: AMDGPU-PRO

Unless you're using it for Vulkan you're actually better off with the FOSS stuff these days. Check phoronix.com if you doubt me. All I would do is install up to date versions of the kernel and major graphics stack packages if you're looking at gaming.

Re: On screen keyboard that works?

Ubuntu's Onboard works quite well. Worth a shot. Only problem I see is that I don't believe it's available for Jessie, so you will either have to check if there's a backport, compile from source, pull the package from testing, or pull it from Ubuntu's launchpad (listed in approximate order of recomm...

Re: Comparing and Talking about distros

It's extremely easy to use btrfs with Debian. It's not the default, but literally all you need to do it hit the 'down' key a few times to select it at install. On top of that, it's actually possible to convert an ext4 installation to btrfs, so I really fail to see how using btrfs by default is reall...

Re: How could I update Gnome desktop dnvironment

^ Pretty much that. Or switch to testing (but it is TESTING, so except problems). Or just be a good little patient Debian user and wait for stretch to be released.

Is there anything is particular that you have problems with in gnome 3.14?

Re: [SOLVED]Gnome-Shell -- High Cpu Usage

Another thing you can try beyond disabling extensions would be to pull an updated version of your graphics driver through backports. My system works much better with the newer xserver-xorg-video-intel package. (Actually, my hardware is extremely annoying and the only thing I've found to stop gnome-s...

https://vivaldi.com is what i am using now. It`s pretty good I think. I think that You should already know that *closed source* solutions aren't working today... Aren't working? Not sure about that; a lot of people use Google Chrome in Linux, and from what I understand, both Chrome and Vival...

Re: It's time to move...

Hopefully they make a stable release soon I can try that out. I have been running Devuan since last November and once I got suspend working - upower needed to be decontaminated - there's hardly been a hiccup. And I'm not the only one. Have you given the unofficial Devuan live a try to see if your h...

Re: It's time to move...

Cool! Unfortunately, I couldn't fix a number of problems on Manjaro, and with university starting up again I don't have time to try anything new with this laptops picky hardware, so it's back to Debian stable (with systemd :? ) for me. Still, I'm not a fan of where systemd is heading, so I think I'l...

Hello all, bind 9.10 is at the moment at sid: https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=bind Is there a way to check is the history of the package (changes, bugs, etc) ? Is there an "expected" date that the package could be moved to testing / stable ? From the link you provided it's alr...

That'll depend, I'm planning to get Debian in a chroot on my phone so it'll stay there, but my desktop/laptop will depend on how development of a number of projects (systemd, openrc, devuan) pans out in the future.

Re: It's time to move...

holy crap, battery life is insanely better. I'm getting like 7 hours worth here at the current rate, as opposed to 5-6 running Debian stable. both with kernel 4.4 (default in Manjaro, only one that worked well on my hardware in Debian, although maybe Manjaro/arch added different options). It's proba...

It's a lynx fork I believe, so pretty similar, but I've had problems with text formatting on lynx, never on elinks.

If we're talking text-based I'd vote for elinks
