Lost IPV4 After Removing Sendmail-Base

Had an issue on one of my Debian stable servers the other day. After doing apt-get upgrade I was prompted to do autotoremove. It wanted to autotremove Start-Date: 2015-12-21 16:25:05 Commandline: apt-get autoremove Remove: sendmail-cf:amd64 (8.14.4-8), exim4-config:amd64 (4.84-8), sendmail-base:amd6...

Undo Updates or Install Of Package

A killer feature of yum is that you can run updates, then if something breaks you can run yum undo. Basically, yum keeps a log of what it did. Is there any way to do with with apt-get, aptitude, or dpkg?

Some Tips About Debian Printing (Necessary Packages)

I have pulled my hair out getting Debian Squeeze to print with a printer that normally works fine in other, more spoonfed, distributions. I have built my Debian install from a minimal install and wish I had someone tell me the things that I am about to tell you. Obviously this won't cover all instan...

Re: Gnome-Shell slowness is killing me!

Gosh the responses here are terrible. I guess there is a hate toward gnome 3 in the debian parts.

Get a Fedora 17 CD and try that out. See if you still have the problem. If not, try to note the differences in the systems.

Re: XFCE + Nautilus + Windows Shares

Ah, I figured it out!

I needed(to my knowlege) the gvfs packages listed above, as well as fusesmb and the Users and Groups application for Gnome. I then went into Users and Groups, Advanced Settings(for my name), and checked the mount user-space filesystems (FUSE).

BAM! it works.

XFCE + Nautilus + Windows Shares

Hi all, Back when I used Gnome I could mount windows shares and read and write from them. Currently I have XFCE installed from the xfce-desktop package and need to have the same functionality. I don't mind using Nautilus to do so, and actually prefer it. So far I have installed nautilus and gvfs-bac...

Repository Questions

Hi all, I am wanting to understand repositories better. Lets say for example I have my sources set to main, then I add the debian-multimedia repository and do an aptitude update and aptitude upgrade. After doing that some new packages get pulled in. Now, lets say I want my debian to be pure again. S...

WICD "Bad Password: Fix Debian Squeeze(possbily others)

Using a icewm I really didn't want to pull in network-manager-gnome. I tried wicd multiple times, but I kept getting a "bad password" message when connecting to my password protected wireless network. After A TON of googling (probably 10 hours combined) I came across a post telling me to p...

HOWTO Install Tonido on Squeeze 64-bit

This guide only covers 64-bit because it is all that I run. I believe the 32-bit version installs no problem, but 64-bit requires a few more steps. What is Tonido? - http://www.tonido.com/ Interested? Have 64-bit? Read on! Tonido's documentation( http://www.tonido.com/help/Index.htm?context=60 ) on ...

Is there any media in your drives(CD, USB stick) that your system could be trying to boot off of?

Re: Vim, Nano or Emacs Which do you prefer?

I personally use Vim. I also use Pentadacte(Vim keybindings) in Iceweasel.

I really like Vim for coding. If I have to just edit one line I may just write nano and use it.

Re: Things That Make me Love Debian

Just nuked Ubuntu off my last trial computer last night. My wife liked the pretty UI, but it was eating up 1.6 GB of RAM on idle. I replaced it with Debian 6, replaced metacity with compiz and replaced the gnome panels with awn, and she's loving life now, at about half the RAM. I did something simi...

Re: Epiphany

I'd like to use Epiphany as my everyday browser. It's the one with which I have fewest (minor) problems. I have a few small problems with it though - is there a way to restore your last session's pages? - is there an extension where I can open a tab on the tab line, if you see what I mean? - this i...

Gnome 2 here until 3 hits stable. I can't wait for the change, but am patient enough to know that it will probably only be ready once it hits stable.

Re: GNOME 3

I just tried the gnome 3 live cd on debian testing, I know it's new and change from the familiar can be disturbing but as far as I could see it was pretty bad. Maybe a hasty decision but I'll avoid that upgrade because to me it just doesn't look like an improvement.Couldn't wait to eject that cd an...

I just noticed that my wallpaper had an off-center logo, so I just centered it and made a 1280x1024 version as well. http://pages.suddenlink.net/handheldcar/images/wallpapers/thumbnails/debian1280x800thumbnail.png http://pages.suddenlink.net/handheldcar/images/wallpapers/thumbnails/debian1280x1024t...
