Re: Not playing video clips

More than likely you need the codecs. Search for and install 'w32codecs' Another one to add - this is for DVD play back - is 'libdvdcss2'. While you're at it, don't for get Java: 'sun-java-jre'. By the way, if you installed Flash and the sites don't play make certain you installed 'flashplugin-nonfr...

Re: Squeeze on HP Pavilion dv6-2044el

There were times where the GUI install did not work for me and I had to use the Text install method. Can't tell you why. Might give that a try. Not that much harder to do. Also, when installing on my HP dv6000 I run an Ethernet cable to it. I've never been able to install my Debian strictly via wifi...

Re: abode flash in Lenny

Well, all I can say is these worked for me. Never had any problems with them. And still I've kept the repos to a minimum. Not like the 10,000 I've seen posted.

Re: Fedora User Confused!

If it's any help to you, I also have a 64 bit processor in both my laptop and desktop. But I still use the Debian 32 bit OS (Squeeze). I feel some apps and programs are not ready and one has to jump through hoops to install them. I've yet to encounter any problems doing it this way. And see nothing ...

Re: abode flash in Lenny

First of all I would suggest you only use the repos for your Debian branch. I don't much care for 'Backports' or using 'Sid' or sidux repos. Thou some do this, I feel it ends up bastardizing your Debian OS. It's a case of too much mixing and matching. God know what kind of problems you'll end up wit...

Just out of curiosity, could I ask why in heaven's name you'd want an OS this old?

Re: Failed upgrade from lenny to squueeze

I too had the same problem with upgrading to 'Grub2'. If only I waited all would have gone well. Anyway, on the second install of Squeeze, I kept using Grub 1 until during an upgrade the OS asked me if I wanted to upgrade to Grub2. I said yes and picked from the options available where to install it...

Re: I did dist-upgrade, but my kernel doesnot change

That is mean, I will stay forever with 2.6.26 if I stay with debian lenny? Yes, that means if you stay with the current Debian Lenny/Stable, you will stay with the 2.6.26 kernel FOREVER! Unless you go through all sorts of extras for something else. I like the stability of Debian. Most do. One can c...

Re: Installing video drivers in two diferents kernel

I have it solved. I can install proprietary nvidia driver en tow diferent kernel this way: sh nvidia.run -K With this option, I install only the kernel module, I tried it and it works like a charms for me! Only god and you know why you'd want to do it this way. But congratulations that you can. Can...

Re: Installing Debian

I think, unless you're using a rather older PC, most PC do boot up with a CD. That would lead me to think it's your DVD. The very first thing I would suggest is to download the ISO again. And check it with MD5SUM before you burn it to a CD. God, I can't tell you how many CDs I wasted not doing that....

Re: Installing video drivers in two diferents kernel

My post will not answer your question. Maybe it will help anyway. I would suggest you use one or the other of those kernels. If it was up to me, I'd go with the .30 kernel. It's the newer and more up to date of the two. You'll get better hardware support and other things with the newer one. That wou...

Re: What do you prefer for your desktop: Lenny, Squeeze or Sid?

Testing is the only way to go for me. Its apps are newer but stable enough to use on a daily basis. For example, I'm using Iceweasel 3.5.5. Except for the new Grub, I've never had a problem with the latest Testing/Squeeze. Or any of the previous Testing OS I've used. There is one thing I do with eve...

Re: Trying to make the switch, need newb explanations

Frustrated, first of all, you want to try Debian. Good going. Second, forget Wine, the Testing branch, and flat out forget Untested and all the other recommendations made. As well intentioned as they are you've got enough on your plate to deal with without have to mess with something new. The Stable...

Re: can't install synaptic

I have to know, why are so many users so in love with aptitude? I've always preferred using apt-get for all of my needs. I'm sure there's some philosophy behind choosing aptitude, but I just don't see it, so please explain. I have a confession to make, I use Synaptic - a lot. And this is after year...

Re: gnome installation issues

I've been using the netinstall CD for years. Very rarely has it failed me. You might try that. What I can't understand is why you could install it at first using the DVD but not later using the same media. Odd that. Give the 'netinstall' a try. After all, it doesn't take that long to download or ins...

Why are you attacking GNOME and KDE - the 2 leading DE. What I'm wondering is why would you use things such as amazing and fluxbox? I have fluxbox and although it can be configured to be beautiful it is much harder to control. With fluxbox basically your desktop is just a picture for you to look at...

Some here will express their religious zeal towards Aptitude, claiming that if you use apt-get, then you're a child, or, worse still, someone who should still be using Ubuntu. I won't mention their names, but ... At the risk of appearing paranoid, I would like to state that I, for one, have never d...

Gnome: The epitome of simplicity. And that's the way I like my Desktops.

KDE is too complicated for my taste. Too clunky.

Ultimately, it boils down to a matter of taste.

I know that sometimes one is forced to use tarballs. But personally, I hate tarballs! With a passion. And so I stay away from them as much as I can. One of the reasons I'm a Debian fan. Very rarely do I have to use them. One other thing, rather than use a tar file, look for a .deb package. Much easi...
