Re: Slackware as home server

I have a home server that runs on Slackware and it has been quite painless (it also hosts my personal Mediagoblin instance in addition to my blog). Slackware comes with Apache pre-installed but it is configured slightly different than Debian. For example, it is called "htttpd' instead of Apache...

Resigning from forum staff

I do not wish to follow Debian in the direction the project has chosen. I am therefore resigning from my position on the forum staff and will not be visiting the forum as much in the future.

Re: Potential Member not allowed to register

I don't know what to do about such situations. My (limited) understanding is that the forum gets its IP block lists from about ten different services. There are apparently some PHPBB mods available that permit whitelisting, but I don't know whether they are installed (and I do not have access to the...

700 mb of ram are not enough to cache data? Or, for the ones who consider a 2 Gig machine low-resources, 1700 mb ? Since I cleared my caches last night, I have built up nearly 3GB of cached blocks. This is largely owing to having done some large compiles and it means that repeating such compiles wi...

Re: operating systems without systemd

Well: I got machines with more ram too. Thing is: none of them uses more than +/- 300 (with claws, firefox, pidgin and tilda running). Most of that being used by firefox, of course. Not that sure what would be the point to get more ram .... so that more sits idle? Linux will use any available spare...

I think you would have to run it once for each partition on the disk, changing the START value to be the end of the previously rescued partition. (It still might not have helped with your luks filesystems.)

With only one day remaining in the voting period, ... The voting period extends until the end of Tuesday, November 18th (UTC). https://www.debian.org/vote/2014/vote_003 ... fewer than 500 (of the 1000+ DDs) have bothered to vote? https://vote.debian.org/~secretary/gr_initcoupling/ Is such a low par...

Re: Help with Partition Problem (I possibly lost all my data

What can I do to recover my files? Please don`t tell me it`s all lost After cloning your drive (if this is possible), you could try using the 'parted rescue' command. PARTED(8) GNU Parted Manual : : rescue start end Rescue a lost partition that was located somewhere between start and end. If a part...

Is it feasible to re-arrange your invocation into the following?

Code: Select all

Did you install the gmp dev package?

I think it would be installed with:
  • apt-get install libgmp3-dev

Re: User folder can be fully migrated to difference arch?

I would say that for the most part doing so should be quite safe and produce no problems, though there may be a couple of things to look out for. For example, if you have GIMP plug-ins installed in $HOME/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins that were compiled for x86_64 then they would need to be re-compiled for i386...

Jessie is now "frozen"

The Debian release team today announced that Debian 8.0 (Jessie) is frozen. This basically means that only changes that fix critical bugs will be accepted (some exceptions may be allowed, but only with a waiver from the release team).

Re: Discussion for General Resolution on Debian's init syste

I made a mistake in my initial post of this thread in stating that the requisite discussion period for the General Resolution had not started. I took the "TBC" status for the discussion to mean that it was yet "to be confirmed" or somesuch, and that the page would be updated once...

Re: stripe_cache_size

You can not create directories or files in /sys because it is a virtual filesystem (mounted as type sysfs). This is a means for the kernel to provide information and in some cases receive it. In the latter case, you can write to the file if it already exists, though not all files in /sys are write-a...

I think the problem is that the nvidia driver does not support hotplugging. Perhaps you would be willing to try the nouveau driver.

Re: Debian rejects my user pw yet still lets me in as root

It may be that your user has a different locale than root. Try the following: As root, edit /etc/passwd and delete the " x " from the line that begins with " username:x: " As root, edit /etc/shadow and delete everything between the first and second colons in the line containing t...

It is possible that the keyboard input method that is reading your password is encountering special characters that get translated into a Russian character alphabet. As a hypothetical example (I am not familiar with Russian), if normally you had to type 'd (apostrophe "d") to obtain "...
