Re: message for devs

Ah ... not so much specifically aimed at you just general frustration and there's A LOT to it that won't bother getting into. Long been my personal view that new to Debian, definitely shouldn't mean new to gnu/Linux. There's a big difference involved ... Don't take the PEBCAK thing personal, also lo...

Re: message for devs

Debian is not a newbie oriented distro, if while considering installing it a person were to do any, even the slightest bit of due diligence and of course they had a realistic view of their present abilities, then they would know Debian proper wasn't going to work out well for someone in their niche....

Re: problem with apt and sid repo and preferences

Dang it for record a pin-priority above 1000 ... such as 1001 will downgrade pkgs for that repo. Having unstable pinned at 100 is fine but not having testing set as it is, that high. 900 would be okay, so would 500. Your install is fine just adjust your pinning. 4-record take 2, not that matters and...

Re: Best way to run the latest Firefox on Debian 11?

^ Firefox is one of those things that seems no matter how long someone has used it, can still always find something new and interesting in it. Another way to create profiles, type "about:profiles" in the browsers address bar + hit Enter key and you have the option to create/rename/remove-e...

Re: Best way to run the latest Firefox on Debian 11?

It's gnu/Linux someone can have both and/or several instances or versions of Firefox no problem. Easy enough to assign specific mozilla profiles to each and have found that's good practice. Prefer running it directly downloaded from Mozilla and store it in users home directory too. Is nice it can be...

Re: Cannot create a persistent link /run/media -> /media

^ Really think it's as good a solution as can be expected, as good as any other approach anyway. Simple and effective, no reason it should ever stop being valid, pretty much asked and answered your own question. :D Couldn't help it: Wanted to comment on the mnt not being suitable for permanent mount...

Re: Auto upgrade/notification with systemd timer/service uni

^ OMG man, did you not read or are you not capable of grokking what's in the OP ? What does it say, if there's more than 1 friggin line = avail upgrades. Crap wasted a couple hours even posting. Not a hey, cool enough, some interesting stuff. A why not install xyz, that does something I could alread...

Re: Auto upgrade/notifiction with systemd timer/service unit

You'll notice in the first script it does do "sudo apt update" The CHK deal is command substitution as outlined to return the number of lines in the full command and that's set as the value of $CHK. Ah no worries. Hopefully some nuggets and interesting stuff in there. I like it better than...

Re: Auto upgrade/notifiction with systemd timer/service unit

^LMAO ... true. :D As usual with Nix, no shortage of ways to go about just about anything. Thought about a couple/few other routes, could've been all of 5 lines in a script + crontab or several other easy ways. No need of installing anything. Still can't hurt to explore some of the mysteries of syst...

Auto upgrade/notification with systemd timer/service units.

Well ... someone was asking in the forum about automatic upgrades/notification. Had been meaning to dork with it for awhile. Though popping open a terminal periodically and running "sudo apt update" etc isn't much bother. Still computers are meant to make life easier and being a dork why n...

Re: Some good bash and bash alias tricks.

Wanted to post a quick enhancement to the notification trick in a previous post. New and improved so that a terminal, in this case terminator will also pop up and display whatever reminder someone has set, in addition to espeak saying it. Could be easy to be out of room or doing something and just n...

Re: Thinking of installing debian but want to use sysvinit

dammit gotta do it ... Why is a technical question, the reason a person is trying to do XYZ (what they're actually attempting to do) can drastically change what more informed techies could/would suggest. Why is more than a perfectly reasonable question in my view. Seen the thread and also started to...

Re: Unintended consequences of planting Firefox 87 in Buster

After the heat death of the universe, I suspect there will still be a Debian server running somewhere. LAO ... nice. :) OP not saying give up on having latest Firefox either, plenty of ways to do so, already mentioned the one I'm most fond of and information on the process is readily available. Man...

Re: Unintended consequences of planting Firefox 87 in Buster

Not reinventing the already endlessly reinvented wheel. An unproven backup/restore method is well, an unproven backup/restore method and clearly shouldn't be used. Almost always have gotten Firefox downloaded directly from Mozilla and run it from a directory in users home. Always latest, automatical...

^ Interesting output ... Should check further ... don't care enough about speculative execution stuff to bother. Dumped enough time researching the topic already. Re: Do you use any spectre-meltdown mitigation kernel parama

Fairly well sure the mitigations are enabled default (99.999%) though too lazy to check the default config file. Atm using a stock kernel, mostly I do go ahead and custom compile them just cause it's something I prefer doing and formerly have taken to actually disabling mitigation measures such as r...

Yeah, do think it's got some funny bits and sure this should be kept, effort went into it. Gotta do it ... Kinda seems like this is more an all over the place personal journal of whatever you happen to be doing, rather than any type of help thread that makes any sense, shrugs. Yes, clearly peeps need to RTFM and also the FAQ's, every gnu/Nix forum since time began all have them. Much of w...
