Re: WARNING!. Problems with the incoming update - kernel 6.1.0-18 & nvidia driver
... Initially I used the proposed-updates update channel to get the nvidia to work on 6.1.0-18. Though afterwards I found out that the kernel 6.1.0-18 also breaks my cheap chinese ps2 dualshock adapter (detected as ps3 controller). ... pretty frustrating as both the nvidia card and the ps2 controll...

Re: WARNING!. Problems with the incoming update - kernel 6.1.0-18 & nvidia driver
Hi All, If you simply enabled the 'proposed-updates' repository and ran your upgrade to fix the dkms issue, you didn't just receive the updated Nvidia driver; you also upgraded to other packages within that repository as well. While most were likely stable, without APT pinning to selectively upgrade...

Re: [Discussion] Is system breaking updates common in Debian Stable?
Yep, and for those who didn't so happen to run an update during this time, they would never have even known about it. I never new about the ext4 thing until reading about it during this week's drama.

I watched this bug play out and all the anxiety it caused. You are all are fantastic. Debian is the best despite these hiccups. Thank you thank you thank you!

Re: WARNING!. Problems with the incoming update - kernel 6.1.0-18 & nvidia driver
Hot Damn! They fixed it in the main release (which answers my question)! I timeshifted back to before this fiasco, ran some full-upgrades and we've got everything back to normal.

Re: WARNING!. Problems with the incoming update - kernel 6.1.0-18 & nvidia driver
And the performance, how much do you need? My wife watches full screen tv-shows using nouveau, and I have said could even play some older games. I don't need the performance myself. This does not mean others do not. Stability and overly dark display issues are why I have generally avoid the open so...

Re: WARNING!. Problems with the incoming update - kernel 6.1.0-18 & nvidia driver
I have repeated many times and will repeat - if you use the open source nvidia video driver, you can update and live without any problems. Aside from performance, there are other issues with that one though. Resuming from hibernation/sleep has often been problematic for example. Also, I don't know ...

My point was in the first paragraph, that many new debian users might be put off by the experience.

Re: [Discussion] Why are severely broken point releases being released for Bookworm
Only thing I can weigh in on here is that anyone who is new to Debian, hits the "download" button on the main site and has an nvidia card will be disappointed with their experience, greeted with kernel panics or a system that is stuck at CLI, and the need to peruse forums to try and figure...

Re: [Discussion] Is system breaking updates common in Debian Stable?
Definitely not common. I used Arch and many other bleeding edge, source-based, and/or rolling distros in the past, and finally settled on Debian back when Stretch was the stable branch for the same reasons you did. At nearly 50, I have become a bit of a curmudgeon when it comes to fixing breakage al...

Re: WARNING!. Problems with the incoming update - kernel 6.1.0-18 & nvidia driver
Hello, I am posting here because this seems to be the main thread for this issue. I am aware of various workarounds for this issue and my nvidia users (including myself) are happy for now. I would like to know though, how does this work on the development side? What I mean to ask is, if I want to be...

Cinnamon VirtualBox Panel Icons
Hi there. I am running Cinnamon 5.6.8 on Bookworm. I recently upgraded to Bookworm and am experiencing what I believe to be a regression related to VirtualBox and the Grouped window list in the panel ... Before the upgrade I was running Bullseye, which has Cinnamon 4.8.6. In Cinnamon 4.8.6 (and even...

HDMI and Soundbar
Hello. When I connect HDMI directly to my soundbar, which then sends the signal out to my TV, I get 5.1 surround without any issues. When I connect to my TV directly and then output to the soundbar through the TV's EARC port, I only get front left and front right channels. What's more, when I run th...

Re: nvidia-settings permanence
Maybe there's a better way, but I came up with this hacky script that runs in the background for now: #!/bin/bash if [[ $(lsmod | grep 'nvidia') ]]; then nvidia-settings -l while true; do ( tail -f -n0 ~/.xsession-errors & ) | grep -q "hotplug or laptop lid event" sleep 13 nvidia-setti...

nvidia-settings permanence
I apologize if this has been answered before. I have seen this all over the internet. Changes made to the nvidia-settings app do not persist across reboots. They can be made "permanent" by loading the config file (nvidia-settings -l) at startup. This is all well and good so far. My compute...

Cinnamon "+ Add to panel"
Hello, I have several systems I manage that are all doing the same thing. They have all been upgraded to Bullseye. When they were running Buster, I had "CobiWindowList" on the panel, which would correctly pin anything I chose to add to it from the Cinnamon menu. With Bullseye, I chose to u...

Re: laptops and custom kernels
Thanks for the info! As to what kernel to choose, I will be going with liquorix. It doesn't seem to be quite so bleeding edge (a good thing) as xanmod, at least it looks that way at first glance with xanmod on 5.13 and liquorix still going with 5.12. Also, xanmod only supports performance and powers...
