Re: KDE - how to manually start?
The easiest way is probably installing xserver-xorg-video-nv and set the driver to nv, that should give you a proper display, but maybe not all the latest bells-and-whisles you'd get with nvidia proprietary driver (see HOWTO here for a great guide if you do want that driver).

Re: Console auto-login
You may want to take a look at the Debian Live project and/or live-helper.
That tool allows you to create your own LiveCD and it also does automatic login.
When I want to exit my own KDE LiveCD I get a msg saying that there are still ppl logged on to vt1-6, and those are console logins (afaik).

Re: KDE - how to manually start?
I was talking about kdm/xdm - nothing happens when I try to restart them. Indeed, that info is so much more informative  startx gives me this: (II) LoadModule: "nvidia" (WW) Warning, couldn't open module nvidia (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia" (EE) Failed to load module "n...

Re: New and Confused
I just followed the wiki, but if I boot from the original kernel my wireless card no longer works. That has probably got to do with drivers which are part of the new(er) kernel and not part of the default/original kernel. I don't know what 'backport' means; what would you suggest I should have done...

Re: kpowersave and suspend to disk (or suggest another package)
What system are you running? If you're using KDE 4(.3) you shouldn't use kpowersave, that's a KDE3 thing. Powerdevil is the thing you need to use (System Settings - Advanced - Power Management). And since you're using a laptop, you'd probably also want the Batery Monitor widget, which allows you to ...

Re: New and Confused
When installing the nvidia (proprietary) drivers, I always follow this tutorial: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=10812 Never failed on me :) Beware that when you go for your custom real-time kernel that it includes the stuff which RA apparently needs and you need the headers matchi...

Re: KDE - how to manually start?
I would suggest you'd look in the Xorg.0.log to see why it died.
Does startx work?
Does startx work?
It would give us more clues when you specify what "nothing helps" entails, ie: specify what you did/commands you used.nothing helps to restart/start

Re: Mount and access NTFS drive as non-root from GNOME
When I had ntfs drives in my fstab, I had the following: /dev/sdb1 /media/WinDocuments ntfs-3g defaults,noatime,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0 And I could read-write to it as a normal user. Things get different though when you'd not automatically mount it (during boot), but manually (for example with the noa...

Here's some info on the various components: introduction into what Soprano, Nepomuk, Strigi, and Akonadi are Pimp my Nepomuk (it's about enabling sesame as soprano backend) How make Nepomuk work (more or less) on Debian Virtuoso (another soprano backend) is coming ... What's the reason for using dmraid over mdadm?
The latter is suggested by that same wiki page over dmraid.

Re: Problem with instalation VMware 2 on Lenny(2.6.30-bpo.1-686)
I'm not running Lenny, but the fix in the following thread fixed it for me:
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/215985
Don't worry about the _X64 part, it works for both 32 and 64 bit versions.

Re: live-helper lh_build
Is there a way to do lh_build but without having to download all the files again and again...? I need to test out my iso but everytime I "rebuild" it, it downloads everything again (about 200Mb) even though all the packages and stuff is already in the cache folder. Yes, use a deb/apt prox...

Re: KDE4 is here
FYI, KDE apps such as systemsettings and dolphin can be run as root by using 'dbus-launch' ... e.g., from a root konsole/xterm: # dbus-launch systemsettings On my KDE 4.3 system that didn't work, but I found another way to launch it and that worked (for me): /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu systemsettin...

Re: sun-java5 removed from archive
You should be fine. If it installs another implementation it should still leave the one that's there alone (you can have multiple versions installed simultaneously), but unless something has a specific dependency on java6 even that shouldn't happen, since sun-java5 still "provides" the ne...

They are removed from the archives and I can't find the local packages anymore either. Can someone help me get the various sun-java5-* packages of version 1.5.0-20? I'm interested mostly in the i386, but if someone has the amd64 version, that would also be very welcome. I know that Lenny has the -17...

The errors have gone away. Apparently it didn't like the trailing slash I had in http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ and apparently I corrected that before posting here (and after the aptitude update like I posted here). But the downloading of the package still takes ages and I couldn't find a/the reas...
