Re: I love Debian, but...

I've been running both Debian and Arch, for quite a few years now. It's been great having both available. They're my two favorite distros, and I can't see myelf dropping either one. It certainly doesn't have to be one or the other.

Re: "bullseye-updates" suite

Thanks, craigevil.

I found that this page has some info on the stable-updates mechanism: https://wiki.debian.org/StableUpdates

So, user's choice. A line for the bullseye-updates suite can be added or left out. That's how I'm seeing things, anyway.

Re: "bullseye-updates" suite

Thanks, folks. Okay, from the FAQ, "What should I use in sources.list for bullseye?" (https://wiki.debian.org/DebianBullseye): deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye main deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security main deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-upda...

Re: "bullseye-updates" suite

Yeah, and yet the manpage example leaves out that last line. And I saw this in an old bug report (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=972743):
With the release of Debian bullseye and later, security updates are
provided in the bullseye-security suite instead of bullseye/updates.

"bullseye-updates" suite

From man sources.list in Bullseye: As an example, the sources for your distribution could look like this in one-line-style format: deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye main contrib non-free deb http://security.debian.org bullseye-security main contrib non-free or like this in deb822 style forma...

Re: obmenu replacement ?

I really like obmenu. I don't have a replacement. Could be a bad idea to do this, but a few months back I enabled the Buster repos, installed obmenu in Bullseye, and then disabled the Buster repos. So far so good. I'm hoping somebody will put obmenu in Backports.

Re: For how many years have you been using GNU/Linux?

I started playing around with Knoppix (live sessions from CDs/DVDs), and picked up a cheap laptop that came preinstalled with Linspire, back in 2005.

Did my first real Linux installation (Mepis) about a year later. Been using only Linux at home (no Windows) since 2007 or 2008, something like that.

Re: Documentation for apt

Yeah, I agree with you, mm3100. The documentation could be better, no question. But I think there are quite a few of us who get along okay doing all package management from the command line. (I used to rely on Synaptic, but I don't use it anymore.) Users might have to dig a bit to uncover certain de...

Re: Documentation for apt

Re depends and rdepends , these were inherited from the apt-cache command and are mentioned in man apt-cache . Score!! And of course man apt-cache is mentioned at the bottom of man apt : SEE ALSO apt-get(8), apt-cache(8), sources.list(5), apt.conf(5), apt-config(8), The APT User's guide in /usr/sha...

Re: Highlight today in cal

ncal shows it but I'm not sure why cal doesn't. What version of Debian are you using? It doesn't highlight in my Bullseye version. I just had a short play with it and cal doesn't seem to take most of the options listed in the man page. To display the behaviour you are expecting with highlighting, u...

Re: Install Buster v10.9 stable or Bulleye v11 prerelease?

Hm. I first installed Bullseye back in February, and now I've got four Bullseye installations here. I haven't seen any issues. I get the feeling that Bullseye is very close to moving to Stable. I personally would not install Buster at this point.

Re: QuodLibet vs Audacious vs DeaDBeef ?

DeaDBeeF and Audacious are my current favorites. I'm not sure yet which one of the two I like more, but I've been using DeaDBeeF the most lately. I only recently found out about DeaDBeeF; I've been using Audacious for some years. Either one of those seems like a better fit for me than Quod Libet (wh...

Re: Frustrated with Debian Installation & More

It’s really cool that you picked up a lot in a short period of time! Hopefully I will be able to do the same. No, for me it was the opposite. I think I came at it much more slowly than most. I was still using Windows most of the time, and I picked up a cheap Linspire laptop, messed around with that...

Re: Frustrated with Debian Installation & More

Wow. One week. Do you know your way around the Linux command line already? I guess I had picked up a few commands after a week. I don't think I had grasped the importance of man pages after only a week, though! If I even knew how to access them. In short, if you have any recommendations on a stable ...

Just now, I installed the older version from the Stable repos. That version didn't work for me. Ran the following and got a working youtube-dl : $ sudo apt purge youtube-dl $ sudo wget https://yt-dl.org/latest/youtube-dl -O /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl $ sudo chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl $ hash ...

I used the Graphical install option and left the Root password blank. The installation did indeed proceed,...

I must have been distracted and used the Graphical Install instead of the normal installer.
That part wouldn't matter -- when the user goes with the Graphical install option and the Root password is left blank, you get sudo.
