Re: Debian tool for restoring boot sector?
Oh thank goodness. I've just tried testdisk again and it has found the backup bootsector and restored it successfully.
Now the partition can be read and written as usual.
Thank you for having insisted on testdisk. It's for sure much more intelligent than Disk Probe, though not as flexible.

Re: Debian tool for restoring boot sector?
' testdisk ' would be my first port of call. It's in the repo's Oh thank you dilberts. This testdisk tool is great. Now I'm running it and it turns out that the partitions in my hard disk are also heavily messed up. I'm thinking of deleting all of them and create a new and clean disk and install so...

[SOLVED] Debian tool for restoring boot sector?
Hi all, I've carelessly installed grub on hda5 instead of hda, using: # grub-install /dev/hda5 And now my hda5 cannot be mounted with ntfs-3g. Here the error message 'mount' gives: Failed to mount '/dev/hda5': Invalid argument The device '/dev/hda5' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS. As far as I kno...

He's running Linux and his PC is weak is not equivalent to He's running Linux because his PC is weak.
Therefore it doesn't mean that "If his PC is more powerful, he'll be running Windows."

Re: what's your boottime?
It takes me 28 seconds from Grub to login prompt, on a Celeron 1.3Ghz
Maybe we should work out an equation between hardware, services and boottime

Capture animation with scrot
Hello. I'm trying to produce some screenshots of the screen in which there's a window playing a video in avi format. The problem is whenever I take a shot, the video window appears 'solid blue' in the output image. Is there any way or program with which I can capture the current frame of the video. ...

Re: Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
I briefly saw error messages when I ran it as you said but I had no time to read them. They were before the amixer stuff. Do you know where alsaconf stores its output (if it does store it)? I'll try again, as you advised me to, maybe it'll work eventually. Thanks a lot for your advice. I don't know...

Re: Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
Finally I got it working. :D The problem is in alsaconf. Sometimes it does a good job recognizing and configuring your card, and sometimes it just doesn't. Here the step I used: - Reboot your computer, into command line interface (just for making sure that no other app interfering alsa) - Run alsaco...

Ah-ha. Mine is a recent laptop and the sound never functioned. Do you thing we should revert to a previous version of Debian? Which was the latest version you had which functioned? Well, the fact is that I had Debian Lenny 5.05, and the sound was OK. After some time, I messed up stable and unstable...

So glad to see such a useful howto. But how about that 'different procedure' for users of Lenny like me ?kedaha wrote:
(Please note, this only works on Debian Squeeze. To get it working on Lenny will require a different procedure).
Hope you find this useful.
