Re: Are Debian developers f***ing with us?
OK I get it - Debian is flawless, there are no mistakes, if there are we do not allow you to point them out. I don't see a difference b/w this behavior and communism. I don't think I want to be part of these forums any more. I'm sure you won't miss me. While there are a lot of good people here it ta...

Re: Are Debian developers f***ing with us?
Another bug: I was doing some images editing today with GIMP. Images were in PNG format and I had 4 of them open. I had to combine 3 into 1 etc. Whenever I did that GNOME panel stopped responding. Computer was running fine but the panel disappeared. I did CTRL+ALT+TAB to reset X but panel was still ...

Re: Re:
julian you know in engineering and science as a whole there is a thing called safety margin. It comes in many forms but the main idea is that a device designed to do a task won't always be used the way it should be and when you build something you should account for that. Now if you are a developer ...

Re: Re:
I was in a hurry so I just powered it off. It gave me a kernel failure. I don't think it should count an improperly detached HDD as a kernel failure but maybe I am wrong, who knows. It's a terrifically dumb thing to do, in a hurry or no. If you think the Linux kernel is unique in not behaving nicel...

Re: Re:
Also if I power off an external hard drive (without unmounting first)..... About Debian - I like it because it has many packages. However Debian is for newbies. Arch, Gentoo etc are the real deal. Glad to hear it. I hope one day to become so expert that when I power down a mounted drive I to...

Re: Are Debian developers f***ing with us?
OK today I managed to shutdown normally. I hope that it's gone. I'm not certain but I'll have to see. Reporting bugs. Hmm I am not lazy and I want to help but how do I tell the developers what the bug is? I prefer email than programs cause I used bugbuddy or something like that and all it made me do...

Re:
I think that you're f***ing with us. According to your signature, you run: Debian sid but you state that you have too many bugs for a stable distribution. My Lenny system is running fine. If you are running Lenny (and you haven't mixed your system), then look for the problem between your keyboard a...

Are Debian developers f***ing with us?
I don't know about you but I just tried to switch off my computer and again it didn't switch off. It stops responding and only the mouse is moving. I then have to go around the problem. Then there is a problem with the file system. So far I haven't had anything lost. I use reiserfs Since the last bi...

Re: Future of Linux on the desktop - I am worried
Performance differences are there. A standard Debian CD1 install on a desktop/laptop designed for XP or 2000 will feel slow and mildly unresponsive....you can very quickly get bored of seeing spinning or bouncing notification animations as applications struggle into life. On the other hand if one e...

Re: Future of Linux on the desktop - I am worried
After all people have lives and work and these present their own problems and here comes linux with more. No it doesn't. I have yet to see Linux sneak up on someone and plant problems in their lives. If Linux causes problems for you it's easy to fix: Don't use Linux. To sum up Linux has no good poi...

Re: Future of Linux on the desktop - I am worried
Here is my 2 c. I am running lenny with no programs installed apart from what comes standard with the installation. I still see bugs and it is much slower that windows XP. Not to mention that most of the time the ease of use of apt-get/aptitude for installing programs and the ease of use of linux as...

Re: ATI Installation (for X800)
I've been busy and hence sorry for not answering this post when you asked it. If you install ati prop. driver from debian's repository then you need to tell it which kernel modules to install i.e. aptitude install fglrx-driver fglrx-kernel-src fglrx-modules-2.6.26-2-686 for my kernel for instance. I...

Smart partitioning advice needed
Hey ya, I want to do a fresh Lenny install and I am ready to spare 40GB in total for it. I don't want to put everything into one partition this time. I am willing to use any file system type. For small files I hear reiser is best isn't it? Also I've read a lot of material and everybody suggests diff...

Re: Linux, movies and music
I compiled a kernel some time ago and it took a day or so. I think I'll read Linux Kernel in a Nutshell this time before I do it so that I gain some more insite into the matter. Windows XP though is performing significantly better in many places though. I just checked my RAM usage and after 3 days o...

Re: Linux, movies and music
Do you remember exactly (or approximately) under what section I can change the kernel frequency timer to 1000? Any other such things that are performance killers in Linux and Debian in particular? Any site I can find more info on?

Linux, movies and music
OK I just installed Windows on my machine after 2 years of being windows free. I'll keep it for a few weeks as I want to chillax a little with a few games. I can't help to notice though that sound quality is much better than linux. What bothers me more though is that although BluRay movies played on...

Re: Building your own laptop?
Well if it's cheap (in the future) why not? I currently can't go over 2GB whatever I do but I guess faster processor and faster ram and an SSD could be beneficial to me (I have a CoreDuo 1.8 GHz). Then again I don't play games and I mostly do work which is not intensive at all so you won't see me em...

Re: Building your own laptop?
My parents have a Compaq nx9xxx and it's still going on for I think 7 years now. They used it extensively for writing stuff (and I opened it a few times secretly ) but other than that no remarks. Very good laptop.
