If it's allowed in your essay do write about FOSS of your own point of view. For example if there's something in open source / free you disagree with, explain why you disagree with it and what could be a better approach for the whole community regarding the issue. It will make your essay much more i...

That's why I use Debian.
I don't know if you're referring to Ubuntu, but they clearly show more community spirit than Debian even if supported by Canonical.

Why don't you use FORTRAN? All I know is that my father used/uses FORTRAN for various mathematical applications including calculus and circuit engineering. Of course he has Windows and a copy of Matlab but most of the time I find him hacking through FORTRAN code. It's awesome looking, resembles ASM ...

There's a very handy utility though which handles binary data more efficiently than split/cat. In some scenarios "catting" multiple files into one will result in a corrupted or otherwise not complete result. So this utility I'm speaking of is lxsplit , the Linux equivalent of the Windows u...

24-bit / 192Khz DVD Audio format fed to my Pioneer A/V receiver and then to my EGO Systems Pro Audio system = Bliss.

Still hacking through S-VHS tapes and 16-bit / 48Khz DAT, on the PC all I use is WAV, so no wonder I have a separate 2TB RAID configuration for music only

despite the manufacturer and ALSA documenting that it won't support a feature you actually need That's not true. I bought the card basing on the fact there was an ALSA driver: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Vendor-Echo_Corporation and that the sound card supports the feature. It ...

GNU.wasabi: I wasn't insulting you, and I said nothing one way or another about your audio skills. I was simply saying that, given your age, you're unlikely to have much more experience in Linux than everybody since many of the folks on the board are far older than that. Given how excitable you are...

Look I have more years of experience with Linux than you most likely Based on this post , I doubt it. Hey, Linux started as a small hobby of mine when I was 12 and even then tell me how many commercial audio projects did you make when you were 16? I'm in the middle of getting up to being a real pro...

No need for me to explain anything about sound servers and subsystems, just look at this: http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/linuxaudio.png That image is 2 years old and doesn't include Phonon. I know, but try including Phonon in there too and it gets even more complex. you bought a $200 sound card...

If the maker of the HW refuses to give any details and/ or design their HW to work only on one OS you can not blame the unsupported OS. Linux is still one fucked up bitch when it comes down to audio support. No need for me to explain anything about sound servers and subsystems, just look at this: h...
