I installed Lenny recently on a board with this chipset using netinst. Works fine. I don't believe I've ever used any other install method and I've never had a problem.
These days it's a prettty safe bet that the kernel will support your ethernet NIC, especially a Realtek.

Re: New install cannot display x- window mode - please help
I have this message "Dsub: Cannot display in this mode". But I use Dsub when I use Windows 7, and it works, so it cannot be that. So, after much chasing around, re-install with a full download (dvd disk1), and installed it. Same error. It was late last night, so, I though I might as well ...

Re: Debian 5.0.2 doesn't start after install
modern versions of xorg "autodetect" everything at startup. This works great a lot of the time. It fails on CRT monitors. For an LCD it's a good idea to use the highest resolution possible. For a CRT it's not. You monitor is reporting what resolutions it can do, xorg is picking one it thin...

I have a desktop with an Athlon XP and laptop with a Celeron (PIII). Both run Lenny. On the Athlon the 486 kernel was install, on the PIII the 686 kernel was installed. As far as I know I've not upgraded the PIII to use the 686 kernel, it was installed that way. I think it's just voodoo. The install...

My understanding of apache comes almost exclusively from the manual. It is quite good and easy to understand. If you just hit http://httpd.apache.org/ you can find the documentation for your version. You may also be able to hit http://localhost/manual/ depending on what you have installed. As far as...

Uh, right. The thing is, I see no place I could connect the DVI to, on neither of sides. There is just a VGA connector on the motherboard and on the back of my monitor. I bet DVI is not backwards-compatible... Also, NVIDIA driver sets the position properly (I'm now using it). I guess you're stuck. ...

Another point that I want to make is, shortcuts (ie launchers) on the desktop do not work! I tried to make one pointing to /bin/bash without success. These are simple tasks, mind you, and, they do not work! :? I've done this kind of stuff with no instructions and it worked just fine for me....

What makes you think this is happening? Is there an error message?websissy wrote:Yet, I still can't figure out where the heck to start looking for a boot step that's trying to start a third disk drive (or a ram disk) that my system doesn't have.

Re: Gnome in 8 bit mode
I reciently did a Debian Etch 4.0 r4 install in a teacher's computer. I had some trouble wtih it due to the fact that it took me a little while to find out the (on board) card takes a VGA driver. After a little research, I found that the standard X11 driver requires the card to be run in 8 bit mode...

Re: X.org nv driver display problems - nVidia 6100 onboard
Now, if I just fire up X without Modes specified, it picks a good resolution (1280x1024), but the screen is kindof offset to the right (3-4 cm, can't correct it by my monitor menu). It also runs only at 75MHz, which is indesirable on a LCD screen. Why? LCD screens don't actually have refresh rates....

That's bizarre. I was going to suggest that you do that. What happens if you do Ctrl + Alt + F5 and use shutdown -r now ? This should only work as root anyway. Also, it's a reboot, not a halt. Looks to me like he's trying to shut the machine off without using the power switch, not reboot. I'm guess...

If you're just using it as one large volume, 2 drives is more reliable than 4. If one drive fails, you will probably lose everything. At least that's how I understand it. So 4 drives is twice as likely to fail as 2. If you use 4 drives and RAID you'll get more reliability (if you mirror), but half a...

I am relatively new to Debian. I have been a pretty avid fedora user but I gave Debian a try on my laptop and fedora is getting more and more irritating. Anyway, my question is about repositories and releases. Me too. Ran Fedora for years then switched to Debian about 8 months ago. Sid is something...

Note that date says your time is UTC. You have the correct time zone, but the system thinks your system clock is set to UTC instead of your local time zone. It's a different setting that is configured during install. Fixing that will probably put everything right, but I can't remember where the sett...
