Which graphics cards are supported without adding drivers?

I'm putting together a system using an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X. Unfortunately, these chips don't (yet) come with graphics so I need to get an actual graphics card, something I've never needed before. I'd like to a get card that works with one of the drivers in the Debian distribution - I'd rather not have...

Can I move system disk to new hardware?

I'm going to be assembling a new AMD Ryzen 5 5600X based system. I'm wondering if I can simply install my current system drive on the new system. I.e. not buy another ssd drive and not reinstall debian. I'm currently running Debian 4.19.181-1 on an Intel Core i7-4790K system. I would think that the ...

gnome-alsamixer on Buster?

Has anyone installed gnome-alsamixer on Buster (Debian 10)? There is a package for Debian 9 but not for 10. I haven't found a tarball for building from source either.

thanks

Re: Exclude a package from 'aptitude full-upgrade'?

I tried aptitude -s full-upgrade libreoffice-base-core= but it comes back with No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed whereas there are 12 package that should be updated. Should I be using hold with a different aptitude command? Or will libreoffice-base-core be skipped the next time I r...

Exclude a package from 'aptitude full-upgrade'?

Is there a way to exclude a package from 'aptitude full-upgrade' or 'aptitude safe-upgrade'?

I normally run 'aptitude full-upgrade' regularly but there is one package I need to keep locked at an old version. The aptitude man page doesn't say anything about this.

thanks

Re: How to get JavaFx to work in Netbeans (on stretch)?

I gave up, removed the netbeans deb package and installed netbeans directly. Not the solution I'd prefer, but it's not clear how else to get JavaFX support in netbeans.

[GAVE UP]How to get JavaFx to work in Netbeans (on stretch)?

JavaFx support appears to be missing from my Netbeans installation. I've installed java (java-common, openjdk, etc.), openjfx, and Netbeans on a stretch 9.3 system, using standard deb packages. Netbeans works, but there's no 'JavaFx Application' option in Netbeans 'File -> New Projects'. According t...

Re: What's automounting my usb drives and how can I stop it?

The culprit was Thunar. It wasn't actually automounting (that's disabled by default). But the current version (unlike the one I'm used to) displays clickable icons for some volumes, just below the "File System" icon. Apparently I clicked one by mistake, mounting a usb drive. Now that I und...

What's automounting my usb drives and how can I stop it?

I've just installed a new debian system (stretch 9.3). Something is automounting usb drives. I need to figure out what's doing this and how to stop it. mount is showing /dev/sda1 on /media/moi/f59fe131-f7c3-4e6e-b1d8-291e74e2be67 type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,stripe=8191,data=ordered,uhelper=u...

Re: What, exactly, is in the "Base System"?

I get for the essential packages: ... Thanks for the lists. Seeing them is very helpful. I need to go through them, but at first glance, they look pretty compact. Well, yes--it's also what pbuilder sets up as a base package build platform in the openSUSE Build System for a Debian package, for examp...

Re: What, exactly, is in the "Base System"?

A base system is just a command line system and it is extremely unlikely that someone asking this question will want that. You would have no Desktop (GUI). That is exactly what I want. Generally speaking, you would end up with a command line prompt and not know what to do next. Oh, I think I would....

Re: What, exactly, is in the "Base System"?

Do you mean Standard System Utilities? http://csmojo.com/posts/what-debian-standard-system-utilities-include.html The Debian Installation guide refers to a Base System . Is this the same as the "Standard System Utilities"? I don't currently have a debian system, so I can't test what dpkg-...

What, exactly, is in the "Base System"?

I'd like to setup a minimal Debian system and want to know exactly what packages are in the "Base System" before I start. There must be a list of this somewhere, but I've looked all over and can't find it. There is a Debian page entitled File list of package linux-base in jessie of archite...

Re: WHERE to add a driver to an installation iso file?

I did the install without internet connectivity. Then running dpkg -i broadcom-sta-dkms_6.30.223.248-3_all.deb successfully installed the driver. Does this mean that the broadcom-sta-dkms_6.30.223.248-3_all.deb did the necessary compilations? FYI I have a running, internet connected system. My last ...

Mysteries of high dpi

I recently installed Debian on a notebook with a high dpi screen (3200 x 1800). In the process of dealing with the high dpi, I encountered several things that were mysterious (see below). I did manage to get the system into usable shape, but I'm still mystified. While there are a some things I'd lik...

Re: WHERE to add a driver to an installation iso file?

I did not succeed in adding a driver to an installation iso file. The 'success' I reported in http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=127690&p=611663#p611663 was for something different (although related). Since I couldn't get the driver I needed into an installation iso, I ended up in...
