VERY strange behavior

I've been running for over a year no with very few problems. (All of which I was able to fix). Recently I started having a VERY strange problem. Firstly, my PC froze the other day. It had been up for 10 hours and I was doing a lot at the time but it was strange for Debian stable. Then when I reboote...

Re: Shutdown Script

I can't explain why but it is suddenly working. Thanks for the help. Sorry for any confusion. For future people reading this everything is in the setup as you can see in my most previous post before this one.

Shutdown Script

Recently switch over to testing and there was a big update the other day that switched for the init system to system V dependency based start up. Anywhoo, my custom shutdown script won't run anymore. Here is the script: cat /etc/init.d/viaRhine.sh #!/bin/sh ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: modprobevi...

Re: Radeon 9550 Driver?

Turns out that since I'm on Debian stable (kernel 2.6.26-2-686) I have to use radeonfb (radeon doesn't exist yet). However radeonfb is deprecated since kernel 2.6.32. I don't care about non-free drivers.

Re: Radeon 9550 Driver?

I am using Lenny. What packages are these drivers in? sgfxi seems to be a script not a driver?

Anybody know how I can benchmark these different drivers?

Radeon 9550 Driver?

I have a ATI radeon 9550 graphics card. It's this one: http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/other/Pages/9550-specifications.aspx I'm getting very confused. What driver should I use? If I understand the repos / Internet correctly I have these options for drivers: "radeon" "r...

DHCP and Desktop Responsiveness

I have noticed (don't ask me how it is a loooong story). That while I am connected to a network using any interface (eth0, eth1, or wlan0) that if my ip address was given out (dhcp) that my desktop responsiveness gets worse. Specifically the mouse has a sort of "sticky" feeling. I mean by ...

NIS and Guest Accounts

I'm running a network with a NIS. I want to implement a guest account on my network. The requirements are that the guest can log in on multiple computers at the same time and that the guest account's file are wiped out when they log off. The problem is that when guest is logged in on two different m...

3 Network Interfaces

My system has 3 network interfaces (two wired nics and one wireless). What are some of the neat things that I can do with them on Debian? Here at school each nic on the network gets an equal portion of the network bandwidth. If 100 people are on the internet then the bandwidth is split up equally in...

Random PC lockups

For the aid of others with a similar problem: I got a new (to me, in actuality it was very old) AMD 400Mhz 64MB (of ram) PC. I installed debian on it instantly and I had a compatible (or so I thought) stick of 128MB ram of the same speed (100 Mhz). I swapped the ram out and the system was up and run...

Re: System Boot Time

I apologize. Thank you for calling me out. I have now looked up khelper and kthreadd. They are both vital to the system (kthreadd is the parent of every other process). Somebody PM'd me and sent me a link to a little how-to login and start X automatically which was very nice of them :) I did try to ...
