Re: Why does debian stable freezes the kernel package?

It is not Debian's responsibility to cater to derivative projects that don't share Debian's ideology.

Re: grub ping pong

For uefi, I recommend using refind instead of grub2.

I find grub2 to be an overly complex mess. :(

Re: Why does debian stable freezes the kernel package?

In a nutshell: "Can you please make Debian more like <other distro> . I know Debian has an ideology, but I: think it is wrong/believe it is impractical/can't be bothered to read it. I know I could use <other distro> , but I really want to use Debian even though it doesn't have what I want!"...

Re: HDD can't spindown on debian armel installation

Another vote for leaving it alone.

My experience with modern drives is spin up/down cycles are far more likely to cause a failure than just leaving it running.

Re: NVidia RTX series of cards

Not to ruffle ay feathers here, but most people I know do use the proprietary drivers and I disagree when you say it should be a convenience. This should be a standard. Most people I know don't, so I disagree with your conclusion. No offense, but most of us live in the real world and understand the...

Re: Banana pi SD problem with gparted.

This is the most annoying 'feature' of most SBC's: dependency on manufacturer images. Otherwise, you could just install Debian the proper way and this wouldn't be an issue. From what I gather, the proper image has two partitions - one with a fat filesystem and another with ext4. The second partition...

Re: Protecting data within a folder

...I just want one folder to be protected. I don't care if other folders/files or the whole system is compromised. Is there a way to be 100% sure that a folder is protected in Debian? A compromised system is completely untrustworthy for any purpose. Take steps to make sure the system isn't compromi...

Re: Firefox bullshit

i wouldn't expect debian maintainers to rewrite firefox just for that. Who suggested that? It isn't necessary. Debian packages have the ability to display important messages to users during updates. That is precisely something the maintainer would have sole control over. those addons are completely...

Re: Firefox bullshit

you are conflating your personal options with the security of a bare esr 52 and esr 60 that is debian's responsibility please detail how esr 60 without add ons is more compromised that esr 52? Non-sequitur. User settings are an integral portion of system security. You are suggesting the equivalent ...

Re: Firefox bullshit

so the op failed to do his research about firefox and this is debian's fault  Wrong on all counts. I've long been aware of Firefox Quantum's chicanery and yes the issue is Debian's fault for reasons I'll explain. Is it the end of the world? No, it just pissed me off briefly. I've long since re...

Re: Firefox bullshit

sunrat, There are no equivalent add-ons to replace what I was using. Being unable to support an older version doesn't excuse Debian's failure to warn during the update. God the web is f$&%ed up. If it isn't possible to keep a browser patched for security without a herculean corporate effort, the...

Oh I don't know...how about a f$&%ing message during the update like "Hey we can't be assed to deal with add-ons, so we're just gonna puke all over the settings you've chosen for your system." ? Instead I find out when I get bombarded by f$&%ing popup ads. If they can't maintain my...

Firefox bullshit

Just did an apt-get upgrade on Stretch and got my Firefox replaced with the new Quantum bullshit...and all my add-ons are gone. The particular add-ons I use have no equivalents under the new webextensions model. This kind of bullshit should not happen on a stable apt-get update. Someone at Debian is...

Re: Dual band wireless adapter?

Yeah, Intel is sort of my last resort if I can't find something with open firmware or no loadable firmware at all.

I had really high hopes for the AR9462, but the only format it seems to work in is Mini PCI-E, which does me no good.

Re: iwlwifi Microcode SW error + CPU-Warning

Swapping hdd/sdd on a laptop is pretty simple. You just need a screwdriver. :) Typically you just have to remove the bottom screws and pry off the bottom cover. The hard drive may be held in place by a single retaining screw, and has a small cable you can simply pull off. To put one in, just reverse...

Re: iwlwifi Microcode SW error + CPU-Warning

You could swap hdd/ssd and see if the problem moves to the other machine. Even with the "same" hardware there could be slight version changes, different eeprom values, different bios revision/config, etc. Building a custom kernel with debugfs enabled for your card would give you a better p...
