Re: What have you added to bashrc?

Root PATH was not changed to exclude /sbin. What was changed since Buster is the way to change to root environment now needs to be made with su - . If you do su without the dash it elevates privileges but retains the user environment. Read this: https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=14...

Re: What have you added to bashrc?

I don't understand. Whose PATH do you expect it to be in? It is definitely in my root PATH by default. /sbin is now a symlink to /usr/sbin BTW. # echo $PATH /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin It is not and should not be in user PATH. /usr/sbin/ only contains executables wh...

Re: What have you added to bashrc?

Code: Select all

PATH=$PATH:/sbin
Pisses me off every time I do a fresh install that this isn't in the PATH variable by default

Re: Debian 11 openbox iso?

As a long time openbox user, I prefer to do a minimal netinst and roll my own from there. Initially CrunchBang was my inspiration but having always been a DIY guy, I took that look and learned to configure it myself in a minimal fashion which wasn't hard as I don't have a wallpaper and have very lit...

FWIW I don't see it either.

From the looks of OP's desktop, it looks like he got ripped off

Re: How much do you trust Debian?

I don't necessarily trust Debian or GNU/Linux per se, I just like the way it works, like most computers used to work before MS came along and despoiled the ecosystem.

Windows makes me wanna take a hammer to my PC even though I only run it in VBox ... I'm just glad there are alternatives

Re: Share Your BASH Aliases

It's not an alias, but I'll share anyway as it saves me a lot of typing when doing updates. I run testing and sid from the same boot drive so like to update often... #!/bin/bash apt update && apt dist-upgrade && apt autoremove --purge && apt autoclean I used to use sx for sta...

Re: Automatic Updates?

FWIW i have a small script I run every time I turn my computer on... #!/bin/bash apt update && apt dist-upgrade && apt autoremove --purge && apt autoclean ...which sits in /sbin Granted it's not automatic but I always have a terminal open by default (openbox + tint2) so login...

Re: Why do you use debian?

For example, years ago I installed Icedove to handle my email, just email. Icedove became Thunderbird and grew. Now it has a calendar and a task manager and a chat function none of which I use or need in an email client. Most alternatives are also bloated. What to do? I've tried a lot of OSs during...

Re: Netflix not working in Buster

Sorry, my bad, yes I have tried http vs https and the result is the same. No proxies or VPNs are involved. Just a regular copper line ADSL connection with pretty much default settings. Just to emphasise my last edit: I start Netflix by tethering to mobile internet via my phone and then switch to the...

Netflix not working in Buster

Here's a tricky one. I went to watch netflix and I get this message in Chromium and Firefox. This site can’t be reached http://www.netflix.com’s server IP address could not be found. Try: Checking the connection Checking the proxy, firewall, and DNS configuration ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED The thing is, ...

Re: Is amd64 faster than i386

IMO it depends which generation of amd64 hardware you're using. I recently upgraded from a ddr2 system to an i3 ddr3 system and the difference is very noticeable. I write java apps for windows computers and run WinXP and 7 in a VM and have noticed VirtualBox and everything it runs starts *much* fast...

Java is great, but not for OS/Windowing stuff, just for high-level apps.

Re: Did you start with Debian?

Debian Sarge with KDE on 2 DVDs was my first distro....I was hooked from the first install Had a brief affair with Ubuntu as rt73usb wifi worked out of the box, but once I figured out how and why, I was back on Debian and although I have tried other distros, I have always had a Debian partition.
