Why is MATE not packaged in Debian?
Conscious decision by Debian team not to include it Lack of package maintainers Other The aim of this thread is not to advocate MATE being included within Debian but simply to understand from a technical/project point of view why that is not the case. Can anyone tell me in light of the above, what ...

Re: The Debian Installer
Isn't it the case that to make it as fast to load as Ubuntu or Fedora, you need to set the mirror after the installation and not during, even if you only use DVD1. During a Netinst you set the mirror very early in the process and it gets tested and works well. That sets the stage for your sources a...

Not assuming anything. Least of all what you said.
This is all I said:
And when I asked what the point was, I didn't mean what motivated Canonical. I simply found myself wondering why we should care.

Re: Ubuntu Will Now Have Amazon Ads Pre-Installed
^Not going to reply to all your points, as you say this has been covered so many times. However, it was primarily motivated by my own reflections on how you would sell Ubuntu to a Windows user as a value proposition. My house has no Windows, so I wasn't arguing in favour of Windows. The availability...

Re: Ubuntu Will Now Have Amazon Ads Pre-Installed
This is not an Ubuntu vs. Windows comment. It's a technical comment based on the assumption that most people switching to Ubuntu will be doing so from Windows. Does Ubuntu offer greater stability than Windows? No. Unless you run a long-term support release. Does Ubuntu offer something more ethical t...

Re: Tips from our Members
It seems harder at first but an Expert Install is actually easier. To any question you don't know the answer, just hit enter. Don't allow root log-in and you get sudo set-up nice and easy. If you're coming from Debian-based-but-not-Debian like Mint or Ubuntu, you might want to dual-boot while you ge...

Re: Thanks for the Reminder!
Yes - I always use the expert install these days simply because it's the easiest way to say up a user-friendly system. Expert implies complexity but hitting enter is really not so difficult. Or maybe it is.
[hits enter]
No. Still a breeze.

Re: Newbie here, need help on debian7.0.0 wheezy
Try this for your wireless: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=104151 What DE are you using? If it's Gnome Shell, you'll want to install gnome-tweak-tool and then in one of the settings have it manage the desktop. You need flashplugin-nonfree. It might be in the non-free repository or...

Re: Thanks for the Reminder!
The thing is, it's like with kids. Sure, Johnny can play his own game in which he always gets to be the pirate king. However, pretty soon he finds the other kids gravitating away from him and organising themselves without him. Then he finds he's a pretty lonely pirate king. Let's concentrate on supp...

Re: Thanks for the Reminder!
Dedoimedo is a great read, even when he is wrong. I think the trouble here is that none of us is a customer - unless we have RHEL or SUSE subscriptions - and cannot expect customer service. Community distributions are what they are thanks to their communities. It is ok to say this or that doesn't wo...

Re: New Debian Install
Yeah that's ok if you're fine with that. I just find fallback a bit like MATE (which is available independently) without the options. But if you're happy, that's all that matters.

Re: New Debian Install
^I've corrected my original post. My solution won't help you with your card, as it is too old, and you will need the legacy driver. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about that. What you can probably do is follow my guide to the point of installing fglrx-driver, without actually doing it. Prepare...

Re: What ports are open by default?
Learn iptables but in the meantime this will help you: Open up a terminal and type (as root or prefixed with "sudo" Ubuntu-style) one after the other: apt-get update apt-get install ufw ufw default deny ufw enable It's important to know what a firewall is and isn't. Essentially, things can...

Note that this works for both architectures as the fglrx-driver package now has the i386 packages/libraries x86_64 machines need.

Re: New Debian Install
What's your graphics card? Nvidia or ATI/AMD ? If you don't know, open up a terminal or "the" terminal and type the following: lspci | grep VGA If you're running Debian stable and have an AMD graphics adapter, it's very easy to resolve now - although cards older than the HD5000 series are ...

Re: how to put "username" into sudoers file?
For an Ubuntu-like installation, add yourself to the sudoers file and then (as root) :
Then you will be able to do all kinds of amazing things like open synaptic package manager as YOU.
Code: Select all
adduser yourusernamehere sudo
