Re: Anyone Have Experience With Common Lisp Programs?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think my best option is to use a simple CAM tool like dxf2gcode and then write a custom shell script as a post-processor to add cutter radius compensation to the generated gcode. It's really a shame how little good opensource CAD/CAM/CNC software is being developed...

Anyone Have Experience With Common Lisp Programs?

So to be honest, before finding this piece of software, I had only a vague idea of what Lisp was. I needed a good simple program to convert two-dimensional CAD drawings to g-code to be executed on a CNC machine. This is what I found: https://github.com/wesen/cl-mill Built in (mostly uncommented) com...

Serial TTY Communication Via Shell Script?

So, after building a small Arduino-base (GRBL) CNC mill, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of a good Linux CLI interface to stream G-code files to my controller firmware. Then I found this python script on GitHub: https://github.com/grbl/grbl/blob/master/script/simple_stream.py I'm not all that f...

Re: crazy idea: running synaptic as a non-root special user

Debian is an operating system by hackers for hackers. Not by engineers for administrators who belittle their users. That should definitely be Debian's new motto :) I probably would not describe myself as a "hacker" necessarily, but the point still stands. The "tech guys" at my h...

Re: Newbie - getting rid of Gnome

Don't sit here and take PEOPLES inventory son. If I recomend something to a NEWBIE, it is because others are not. How many wrecks did I get into before timeshift? I would say at least 6 which I was unable to get out of. After timeshift I have been able to get out of every wreck thus far. I suggest ...

Wow, with Magic Chimp, every post is an 'advertisement' for Timeshift, while with Anastasis, each post is an opportunity to sell Mate :? Let's just keep the OP's original question in mind!

Re: After 3 years of frustration, I'm downgrading to Squeeze

Not that it's exactly good practice, but you could always just add the Sarge repos to your sources and install Gnome 2 to Wheezy from there. Risky, but it seems better than using an old OS with no security updates.

Again, if you want to install Flash, go ahead and do it. It should solve your problem.

Re: Not sure this is the proper area, ... playing video & au

Hello guys, Not sure if this is the correct area to ask about this Not exactly, Desktop & Multimedia would probably make more sense. problem is I cant watch video or play recorded sound. "Video and recorded sound" could have a lot of meanings. Im assuming I need to install flash playe...

Well, it appears that you added the multimedia repos properly. Try "apt-get install vlc" and see what happens.

How about you start by using Google and reading the Wikis. Then, if you have quesions, maybe stick to posting one question at a time.

Re: help me in installation of software and editing sources.

You must be root to edit sources.list. After "su root" and entering the root password, use nano (within the same terminal) to add your sources. Finally, use apt-get update & then install VLC. There's a lot of good info in the wikis to help you.

Re: My list of favorite newb friendly linux distros, thought

I personally don't think it is being friendly to newcomers to offer them a solution that is convenient in the short term, but which is likely to cause increasing difficulty and disappointment as time goes on. That sounds about right. I began with Linux, as many do, by starting with the so called &q...

HPLIP Issues With Two Printers

So I'm coming here with my issue since it seems I have nowhere else to turn. A couple weeks back I purchased a cheap ($35) HP Deskjet 1010 deskjet printer to do some basic photo printing. At first I intended only to use it with the Macbook Air that I use through my school (It just didn't seem to mak...
