I'm running a barebones Debian server (no GUI).
The attached monitor never powers down into standby mode. I tried manually setting the consoleblank time in Grub to no effect. I did successfully run "setterm --powersave powerdown" and then the monitor correctly powered down after two minutes so long as I stayed logged in with that session.
Where can I set the default behavior for powering down the monitor?

Re: What's the timeline for Gnome in Jessie?
But to the larger point: if you're unhappy about instability, understand that that isn't going to change so long as you're running Testing. It just isn't. Breakage and instability are the very reasons that Testing exists in the first place.
Yep. I know. :(
I really wanted to run Debian Stable. I may have to take another whack at doing that. I had some issues with some backported drivers though.
Looks like weeks for 3.12 in Sid, hopefully.

What's the timeline for Gnome in Jessie?
So, I'm really having a hard time switching back and forth between XFCE and Gnome. XFCE works and what it does it does well, but I was actually getting accustomed to Gnome (heavily modified with extensions) for my workflow. Apparently, there's some lingering issues with Gnome on Jessie, such as Suspend not working, background properties window crashes, and some general instability I've personally encountered as well.

How do I enable suspend in Jessie or Sid?
I read that there's apparently a problem getting suspend to work in Gnome, but is it possible to enable it for other desktop environments like XFCE? How are we supposed to do that?

Re: Can I get rid of Nautilus helper bars?
I've continued doing some research into this. Apparently, the bars simply cannot be removed.
HOWEVER, I've discovered that the real problem is that the "Contains Music" bar appears for every usb thumb drive I mount into the computer, even empty ones.
I'm running Debian Unstable. Anyone else see this problem or can recreate it? I may have to file a bug report.

Can I get rid of Nautilus helper bars?
In a few different folders when using Nautilus in Gnome Shell, I get a blue ribbon across the top trying to "help out." In my Downloads directory, it pops up a bar linking to file sharing preferences. The one that annoys me the most though, is when I open a USB thumb drive and it says, "Contains Music" and links me to Rhythmbox. They feel like wasted space to me.
I disabled the file sharing one for Downloads by completely disabling bluetooth on my machine... not an ideal way to do it, but the ...

Re: Password management in 2014
Thank you all for the wonderful responses. @michapma, thank you for all your research!
As for the Chrome and Firefox plugins for Keepass2, I still can't get KeeFox to work on Debian - something to do with the incorrect version of Mono installed (apparently Wheezy has version 3.x, but the plugin was written with 4.x). ChromeIPass may work with the precompiled plugin download, but these days I've been using Firefox more (maybe it's time to make a switch?). PassIFox hasn't worked for me yet, as I ...

Re: Password management in 2014
Thank you for your speedy reply.
Yeah, I saw those. Unfortunately none of them seem any better than Keepass2 for me.
My wife needs something cross platform (Windows and Linux, with Android preferably), and that works in Chrome and Firefox. The big feature missing is browser integration, which is why I'm curious if anyone has some experience with Lastpass (as it's the only one I know of that meets that criteria) or if there's something else I haven't been able to find yet on my own. Password management in 2014
I couldn't find any"recent" information for password management on Debian. I've been using Keepass2 which works well enough for me, without the browser plugins though (can't get either of the Firefox plugins to work). My wife on the other hand needs something easier (more automatic I think, that works in the browser). Any happy Lastpass users out there in Debian land? Is there a better alternative?
I'm not keen on storing my passwords with a big company, but may have to get over that.

Debian Unstable, Gnome Shell background properties closes
Did I find a bug?
I'm running Debian Unstable (only because the Stable branch didn't like my hardware) with Gnome Shell. Nothing showstopping here, as I know how to set the background without it, but whenever I open up Settings and click on Background, the window simply closes.
I like the idea of being able to contribute (at least with filing bug reports), but am having a hard trying to figure out how to "properly" word this bug. I don't know what package it belongs to, whether or not it's ...

XFCE and changing notification area icons
I've been at this for a while now, and can't seem to figure out how the icons in the "Notification Area" on the XFCE panel are set. Occasionally a theme can change them, but usually they don't. I'm big into customizing my desktop to the way I like it, and would really like to put some nice monochrome icons in the place of the nm-applet, the battery status indicator, and the mount indicator.
I'm ASSUMING, it's just an icon filename and directory under /usr/share/icons/<WHATEVER>/something ...

Re: Still debating between stable and testing branches
Wow, that was fast. Thanks!
I should probably also mention that I run a pretty minimal configuration. XFCE with Docky (cairo dock is too bloated for my taste), VLC for my video watching, Chrome and Firefox for browsing and testing, and then Steam for the few games I play (but really enjoy).
Not sure if that would prove to be a more stable situation with sid or jessie as opposed to running a lot more stuff on the box.

Still debating between stable and testing branches
I'm getting ready to take the plunge and go full-on Debian only. I'd love to run Stable, as most of what I need-want is there and I like the idea of being rock solid for my day to day use. However, stable is missing two things: Steam, and an up to date Nvidia driver.
If I choose to go testing for the sake of being able to play the games I love, will it be too unstable for my day to day work (which is mostly web development)?

Simple Testing install to SSD and HD combo?
I've been running Debian for years on an external drive, but am now ready to take the plunge into Linux-Only territory. My system has one 120gb SSD (a Crucial brand), and an external Western Digital Green 1tb drive.
I've been reading the Debain SSD wiki entry and am nearly baffled by what all it's saying to do with extra partition schemes and configuration file editing. I don't mind editing config files and whatnot, but it seems like there's a disconnect between Debian's "perfect" optimization ...

XFCE compositor to fix video tearing?
I've been looking around for a solution to the video tearing problems with Nvidia drivers in all the different desktop environments. Apparently, the only way to fix it is to use an opengl compositor and force a vsync. Problem is, compiz is no longer in debian stable or testing, and I can't find any others.
Could someone please set me in the right direction?
For the record, I'm using an nvidia 660ti, debian testing, and xfce. The only distro I've found that doesn't have the video tearing ...
