Re: minimize maximize and close icons too small
except for the browser You might be more specific. Web browser? Graphical file browser? Something else? What program EXACTLY? Firefox, for example, is a cantankerous [@!%4-cussin'_filter] about stuff like this and so are some gnome programs. If it's Firefox, you might be able to tweak it with local...

Re: system suspends despite settings
If you don't come up with a proper solution that works soon, FWIW, I had a similar issue in another distro and finally just did something inelegant to "solve" it: I wrote a script with a dash shebang auto started at login to run in the background with an endless loop that used xdotool to m...

Re: Make bootable external hard drive system work on most machines
With BIOS you can freely move installed HDD between computers and it will just boot since the default installation refers to resources using UUIDs. With UEFI you need to do additional setup. Thanks, but that's not the issue. I should have made it clearer. The point is, when you install to a hard dr...

Re: Lightweight Window Manager with largest library of shell extensions?
. . . lightweight window manager / desktop environment that I can add functionality to . . . Openbox is great. It is extremely flexible for people who want to tinker. I've run OB only with no further DE under a variety of distros for many years. It's elegantly minimalist and you can make it do anyt...

Make bootable external hard drive system work on most machines
You know how a live disk will work on almost any box you boot it on? I want that kind of hardware flexibility on an external drive. I don't mean a flash drive - I mean a regular usb-connected external hard drive with spinning platters inside coated with magnetic media on which a working bootable ext...

Re: debian-9.2.1-amd64-netinst.iso fresh install - can't get
@ bw123 @ None1975 Thank you, both. These work, so lack of an adequate sources.list was indeed the proximate cause of the problem. Studying the difference between these 2 was enlightening also. @tynman Thank you. I didn't at first catch that you meant that this is true for ALL the different flavors ...

[SOLVED]9.2.1-amd64-netinst.iso - invalid mirrors
I've tried Debian maybe half a dozen times in the last decade or so. I always run into the same problem at the same step - selecting an archive mirror. The first couple of times I just kept trying one after another and after trying 50 or so I'd finally hit one that worked. Later, I discovered you co...

He meant the whole thing but that was conditional on an "if" and doesn't apply since you AREN'T mixing repos. Tryand try a different theme.

for 3 of them. Am i just being unusually stupid?

yes. I was.
When all the files are named SHA512SUMS it is too darn easy to overwrite one with another. mea culpa.

Re: [SOLVED] Useful XScreensaver hacks
I’d like to try and turn my XScreensaver locked screen into a monitoring dashboard. Xscreensaver can be made to display conky and conky can monitor just about anything and display it in just about any font with any color scheme. My own implementation of this isn't perfect. Although it works just fi...

Re: Virtual keyboard at login, how to get one?
Thanks again, verahill. If LMDE really is 'debian' that's what they claim. I believe I have check boxes in synaptic to include the jesse repository, not just the LMDE repository. I can't easily check that to confirm it right now though because . . . then you should be able to simply install gdm3 and...

Re: Virtual keyboard at login, how to get one?
Thanks, verahill. Mea culpa. I should have mentioned what I've already tried. There is no gdm in the Mate DE, as that is gnome thing. But having seen the same suggestion you make here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=199&t=80062&p=486079&hilit=florence+virtual+keyboard#p486079...

Re: System Maintenance??
I use Bleachbit to clean system files and wipe free disk space, +1 for Bleachbit which is a dandy cleaner and can be customized to do deletions that aren't already preset options. I hope you don't mind if I amplify that a bit for OP, who may not suspect what the "wipe free space" option e...

Re: How do I recover squeeze?
You don't say anything about your partition setup. I'll assume the worst and most likely case as the other replies did -- that your data and your system are all on the same partition. Simple and safe answer: If you don't have another drive or at least another partition with enough space to copy your...

Virtual keyboard at login, how to get one?
I'm trying to get some virtual kb running at login, so when the kb gets killed by excessive cola intake or cat pee or just gets lost, I can still boot and order a new one. If that sort of thing seems farfetched to you, I congratulate on your orderly lifestyle. :) Onboard used to work beautifully und...
