cifs in fstab from debian to debian
I have one Debian 9 machine that I run as a home server, mostly serving files over the network through samba. I've installed Debian 10 in my desktop which I ran windows on before without any problem connecting to my files on my homeserver. So when I try to mount the cifs shares on my homeserver in f...

Re: stretch static ip missing out dns
Why not set the static IP with a MAC reservation on your router? Because many services on the server itself demands static ip to be set in the machine. Also, your gateway address is the same as your static IP, which ain't gonna work unless the machine actually *is* the gateway ;) That did it, I kno...

Re: stretch static ip missing out dns
Does /etc/resolv.conf get deleted or its content get overwritten (to what?) ? I comment out all my settings in /etc/network/interfaces and wrote a config in /etc/resolv.conf so that the machine will get a dynamic IP from the dhcp server. resolv.conf stayed the same, my settings were still there aft...

Re: stretch static ip missing out dns
For this to work, make sure you have the package "resolvconf" installed, and use `dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf` to ensure automatically management of /etc/resolv.conf. In this case, /etc/resolv.conf should be a symlink of /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf. Not entirely sure I'm doing this right....

Re: raid5 equivalent growing and shrinking posible?
Thank you for your answer, I'm referring to dropping a drive from maybe 5 to 4 drives in a raid5steve_v wrote:Shrink how? Remove drives? IIRC it's possible within the same RAID level if you have sufficient redundancy, but going from, say, a RAID5 to a mirror is a teardown and rebuild.

Re: stretch static ip missing out dns
This was one of the first things I tried to do but it doesn't seem to make a difference.peter_irich wrote:/etc/resolv.conf creates automatically by resolvconf from the same name package.
Try set dns-server in /etc/network/interfaces like:
dns-nameserver <ip>

raid5 equivalent growing and shrinking posible?
I'm wondering what methods are available if any there is to grow and shrink raid5 (or equivalent). In this new world of software raids the possibilities are much better than back in the days. I've been using lvm for my data drives on my debian jessie home server. Now I'm considering instead of havin...

Re: stretch static ip missing out dns
If you are using a graphical desktop environment and NetworkManager, /etc/resolv.conf will be a symlink to /var/run/NetworkManager/resolv.conf and managed by NetworkManager. I did install gnome and it boots into it but I'm not using it. Will that be counted as using it and is the reason why setting...

I only use my debian home server sporadically and since I had some problems with my old installation I decided to install 9 on a new a drive. The first few steps I take when I make a new installation I install sudo, add my user to sudo group, set up fstab so that it mounts my drives. The third thing...

How do I create a new boot
Novice here. bungled my boot when I tried to migrate from one drive to another drive, long story short, I moved my OS from one drive to another and it's contained in an LVM. It's the boot partitioned that got bungled and since it seems that I won't be able to salvage it it seems that creating a new ...

migrating system drive and boot messed up
First off, I'm very novice and I'm stuck in a bind. I'm running debian 8 as a home server and my sdh drive started to get smart messages about failing drive so I thought I would migrate to a newer drive (sda) so during this process I believe I messed up my boot, I still don't know for sure because I...

Re: Auto backup/sync USB attached storage
I'm sorry, but what You are saying just doesn't add up. You don't need a laptop for $1400 - You need f.e. an old DELL 6xx for max $50 and a new battery - it'll be more durable than that crap which is manufactured today, and nobody will even think about stealing it, because Your phone, camera, table...

Well, I'm getting suspicious -> You want to steal someones' data without being noticed. STOP. If I'm wrong, then please explain what's wrong with the laptop? Because it's one more thing that can be stolen and when you're backpacking through South East Asia I don't want to drag one more bulky thing ...

Re: Auto backup/sync USB attached storage
Why not just use a laptop? ...which has a bettery-backed PSU -> all problems solved. ;) Moreover, some/(most) of laptops can have 2 HDDs mounted, what allows to build a "portable, battery-backed Raid1 array, with built in screen and keyboard" :) Raid1 is far more secure solution, because ...

Re: Auto backup/sync USB attached storage
I will probably also have the root file system running in that way that it resembles how a live CD works so the system doesn't corrupt if I can't gracefully shut it down. This is impossible - that problem is currently resolved (in case of pendrives, or other removable media) by offering an option t...
