Re: <SOLVED>Lost desktop after Sid upgrade?
I decided to jump into sid to get openjdk8 and it has been interesting. Lots of times when you update, you will be in the middle of transitions involving many packages. A good general rule of thumb that has worked for me is that if apt wants to remove something when you ask for an upgrade, give it a...

opendevlite: That wasn't advertising. You've been visited by the resident troll, dasein, who thinks the best way to welcome and educate new users is to insult them and act like they don't know that search engines exist. Some of us assume you have searched for a solution before posting and others got...

Re: [SOVLED]JDK 8 in jessie
There's supposed to be a backport of openjdk8 coming to debian backports, but for christ's sake, it's a year old now, I'm tired of waiting. There are so many cool new features and libraries I just upgraded my whole system to sid, so far so good. The functional programming enhancements are very nice ...

Re: chromium crash random
I guess you installed the pepperflashplugin-nonfree package? I think that's the problem. I'm not sure how to fix it, but I can report success in installing chrome (not the same as chromium) which includes a working pepper flash plugin. I followed the directions at http://www.itworld.com/article/2711...

very basic lisp question
Hi all. Apologies for asking a question that seems like it should be ridiculously trivial, but I've been googling and trying stuff for hours and can't figure out what the problem is. All I want to do is write a lisp function that prints each element of a list on a different line. Here's my code: (de...

Re: Why do people respond to questions with "google it"?
Usually that is the problem for most people, getting the right search phrase, some one with a small amount of intelligence You made my point. Antisocial responses to forum questions posted by new users are all about showing how smart you are. Never did I say that SEO is a socially productive thing ...

Re: Change Desktop fonts colour
This is well outside my area of expertise because I don't use any GUI apps except chromium, but my understanding is that GTK is the library that gets used by most graphical apps that aren't part of KDE. In other words, it's a bunch of code and files that the programs you use go to for resources, lik...

Re: Why do people respond to questions with "google it"?
Huh. Musta struck a nerve with that guy. Why can't we all just be nice? To his assertions about pagerank, well SEO is an entire industry built on guesses, conjecture, and reverse engineering. Google has no incentive to give away how their algorithm works. Don't think fresh content bumps up your rank...

Re: Cant start gnome.
Cool! This makes me wonder if maybe you had unusual or uncommon characters in your password? Perhaps non-ASCII characters? If so, and if you are sure you used the same password in both gnome and KDE, I would suggest that this would warrant a bug report against gnome. Anyway, I'm glad you finally hav...

Re: Why do people respond to questions with "google it"?
Garry, I assure you that my creating this thread was not just to stir the pot. It really is the result of me searching for things I want to do/know and finding countless topics with people JFGIing others with the same question as me. I know how to use a search engine and I usually only get harassmen...

Re: Cant start gnome.
Ryssen: Try this. Control+Alt+f1 to get to the tty. Login as root. Say passwd ryssen and reset your password (substituting ryssen with whatever your user-level login is). Afterwards, if the user name and password you just set don't work, your installation is whack. Somehow, I dunno how. Logging into...

Re: Cant start gnome.
If you want to log in on the tty and then use startx to get into gnome, you'll want to remove the gdm3 package. If you want to use a tty at the same time as Xorg, I think you'll have to log in to both. Most people who run Xorg use a terminal emulator within Xorg instead of the tty, for example gnome...

Re: Why do people respond to questions with "google it"?
I feel ya kedaha, I tried to use duck duck go for a long time and was successful at finding obvious things but the quality just wasn't there for obscure work-related stuff or long phrases, so I've drifted back to evil. I intended my question to be taken as search engine agnostic, but google is a ver...

Why do people respond to questions with "google it"?
Hi all. Maybe somebody can fill me in on forum etiquette here, because I hardly ever use these things. What do people hope to accomplish by responding to a question by saying "just google it" or "I found 18 million hits when I searched this"? Every single day I google something I...

Don't worry Fred, that dasein guy is over 1% of this board and all he does is harass people, never any helpful input. Unless you consider "omg lmgtfy rtfm lol fu" to be helpful.
Maybe changing gtk fonts would do the trick?

Re: format a drive to be read by windows
This is a tough issue. While fat32 is an obvious answer (I can't tell you why it isn't working), a friend of mine says the best choice is to download 3rd party windows software that lets windows see Ext4. Assuming both are possible, I'd say Ext4 is a better choice because fat32 does not have journal...

Re: I can't play a bbc stream on smplayer
I don't use the smplayer frontend, but I have some tips for you using the regular mplayer command. First find some .pls files, for example I found a bunch at http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?88320-Better-quality-BBC-live-Radio-outside-the-UK . Download the files, e.g. wget http://www.bbc...

making mc play nice with mplayer2
Good day all. After hearing the big version change is nigh, I upgraded my wheezy to jessie and have noticed that mc's behavior has changed a little since I was forced to switch from mplayer to mplayer2. On wheezy, I could double click a video file in mc and it would open the video and leave mc going...
