Re: What does your non-Debian desktop look like?
Fresh install (net install, text expert mode, wifi) of Devuan 2.0RC on my second SSD, those are not the default icons, they were a little too dark and ancient for me. https://cdn.scrot.moe/images/2018/05/14/Screenshot_2018-05-13_19-30-19.th.png Edit: just got the system sounds working, wow, what a l...

Re: What kernel do you use
Still using the highest available LTS kernels in both distros... Same Devuan install since the first beta... Linux 4.9.0-0.bpo.6-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.82-1+deb9u3~bpo8+1 (2018-03-22) x86_64 GNU/Linux I keep PCLOS around (on a separate SSD) for multimedia and such...although, the last rou...

Re: What kernel do you use
I stopped installing and testing new kernels. I found out according to my tests, that ubuntu's kernel 4.4.39 can't be improved in terms of performance and behavior with my laptop ( Acer Extensa 5230 ). I dont even try anymore with any other kernels. :o , this kernel works perfect in this model. Sam...

Ha ha, yeah, it is finicky, it has a lot to do with iommu and the VIA USB 3.0 chip. I've been stickin' to the 4.9.x series in Devuan (4.9.30-bpo) and PCLOS (4.9.34), my machine loves 'em. I just hope it'll like the next highest LTS.

Re: What does your desktop look like?
How I like it - dark and minimalist. This is my first Debian install, coming from Ubuntu then Mint. Debian was a bit more of a learning curve, but I'm very happy to be here. https://s7.postimg.org/p4cj96jmf/Screenshot_from_2017-04-20_22_07_23.png Yep, Debian is more DIY, but it's worth it, the 'bun...

Re: What does your non-Debian desktop look like?
Just goofin' around in antiX 16.1 live, installed the Xfce meta-package and the Xfce goodies on the fly and prettied it up. Seriously considering dumping Devuan, it's feeling a little too clunky and sluggish. Lots of nice toys in antiX OOTB. I like boring, work station-like wallpaper, it's easy on t...

You should add a qualifier to your recommendation. Assume a beginner doesn't know anything about our technical jibber-jabber; they might try and install your amd64 package on their 32-bit install. "Jibber jabber"? What part of my post was not clear to you? It was made clear where I instal...

Re: What kernel do you use
In Devuan, from the Devuan backports... 4.9.0-0.bpo.2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.13-1~bpo8+1 (2017-02-27) x86_64 GNU/Linux The drive and USB I/O scheduling really sucked in 3.16.x (see system specs in sig), I have five drives and am constantly loading USB sticks with TV shows for an old DVD player that...

I've just run apt-get update/upgrade and a new kernel version seems to have been installed (Jessie stable) user@debian:~$ uname -a Linux debian 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.39-1+deb8u2 (2017-03-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux But the changelog points to a dead web page. Maybe the OP did not intend it to get political No I did not, I just found interesting so much talent was leaving such a huge organization. I won't lie, I'm no fan of the NSA, but that's a lot of brain power heading for the private sector. Maybe some of them can head to Twitter, lol, their server s...
