Re: Suggest for hosting/domain
https://www.icdsoft.com/ is a good shared hosting. I have used them over ten years. Customer service is excellent. I second the suggestion of icdsoft , I've used them for five years. Or you can wander over to http://www.webhostingjury.com and read the ratings and reviews to help you make your own c...

Re: Motherboard logo not displayed at startup
The link provided by Head_on_a_Stick says you should be able to see a boot menu if you press the delete key during the initial stage of the boot.
Does a boot menu appear if you do that?

Re: Share a Linux directory on Windows
Would it be possible to use a USB memory stick or a USB hard drive?
I often use a USB hard drive with Linux and Windows, but not both at the same time.

Re: problem with doc files
Well if the files are corrupt that's likely your issue. Would an older version of LibreOffice think that files produced with a newer version are corrupted? Is there any chance that you could export the files to a system using a newer version of LibreOffice ... save them in an older format ... then ...

Re: My Debian desktop's internet speed is half compare to la
What version of USB port does each computer have? If they have different versions of USB ports, the speed might be different. There are at least three versions of the USB standard that I know of: USB 1.0, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. Or maybe it isn't a hardware problem. Does the software on the computer in...

Re: Did you start with Debian?
Started computing back in the CP/M and DOS days. Didn't really have enough money to get serious with it. Still don't. First received Slackware many years ago on something like 20 floppies. I never got that installed. Sometime around 2005 I installed Linux (Debian?) on an ailing Win95 system with no ...

Re: Systemd violates social contract
No, not evolution. But retaining unixness, brothers in free *nix. Software is always changing. Some old packages are abandoned rather than being updated. Popular packages are updated to eliminate bugs and threats. Operating systems change too. I understand your point that some standards should not ...

Ah thanks. I don't know why I didn't try apt-get again rather than going back to the GUI.
The system did update and upgrade. Now at Debian 7.6 -- just as you suggested it would be. Thanks.

Re: Systemd violates social contract
All this causes me to wonder what percentage of Debian users would prefer choices that avoid using systemd?
Would there be enough deserters to create a demand for a version of Debian that uses a more gradual evolution?

Re: wheezy w/o network settings, iceweasel works
Went back to the desktop with the hope that it would work now that it has the package list updates.
The Gnome "software update" program is working now.
I know it is doing security updates. Don't know yet if it will let me add new programs.

Re: question about partitioning scheme
Even the GUI installer offers a handful of partitioning choices if you choose not to accept the defaults ... including manual partitioning. Being a novice I looked at the choices and went back to the defaults. Not much on the system so I can always reinstall if the defaults come to annoy me.

wheezy w/o network settings, iceweasel works
Installed Wheezy with a LiveUSB stick as the source. Didn't know what to put in for network settings. System is temporarily connected with a Cat5 cable to a friend's router. IceWeasel works, software update doesn't. System is basically a minimal system which badly needs more software. (This doesn't ...

Re: Smart TVs getting hacked
A CRT won't keep you safe: http://www.newscientist.com/blog/technology/2007/04/seeing-through-walls.html You may be able to collect the signals emanating from a CRT, but you can't hack into the CRT and change what the CRT is doing. Flat panel vs. CRT isn't the issue. It is the "smart" net...

Re: Can somebody share difference between big and little end
So if you have a 2 byte integer containing the value 32766, or 7ffe in hex, a big endian system would store it as fe7f while little endian would store it as 7ffe. Where this matters is when a big endian system is transmitting data to a little endian system. The protocol would have to take that into...

Re: seeking advice on web hosting company
Sites that show only the top 5 or 10 of something cause me to wonder how impartial they are. I like http://www.webhostingjury.com/ for hosting reviews. I've been using http://www.icdsoft.com/ for more than 5 years but I'm not a very demanding user. Any time I've contacted support, they have been ver...
