A lot it seems. You have package managment problems. You do not cd to rar. You don't use unrar to extrat gzipped tar files.Am I missing something?

Re: List of Locked Packages
If I recall correctly apt-get ignores aptitude holds too but apt-mark seems to work for apt-get, aptitude and synaptic. I think apt-mark would probably be the solution to the metapackage problem too but I never remember to play with it in that situation. Heck apt-mark would certainly be easier to re...

Re: apt pinning advice
What package(s) are we talking about?
I never recommend mixing stable and any other flavor, much better to go with a backport.
The best way to figure out pinning/prefs is to configure it and then check and see if it does what you want.

Re: List of Locked Packages
yep that is a messy issue (mostly via synaptic by ticking the lock version box). find those in synaptic > status > pinned The point is that I lost track of which packages I locked been there and done that anymore I stick to echo packagename hold | dpkg --set-selections and dpkg --get-selections |gre...

Re: How to Add User Without SU Access?
I found out that using an account with root access for daily desktop use is not advised as it is a security hole. If you are referring to this - http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=529494#p529494 That was a discussion about a sudo setup that did NOT request a password. If you want/need sudo an...

Re: gnome-shell crashes when applications are run from it.
Why are you compiling?
I would expect gnome shell to crap itself if you run it from within kde.
Where did you get compiz (and why?) from. I would eliminate that 'extra' first if I was trying to figure out what was causing problems. Are you trying to run compiz with gnome?
