Re: Openvpn: failed connection

Not sure if this is the issue: OVPN help is often silent about its critical requirmentL /etc/openvpn/config is where your .key file lives for encrypition , and the user/password file auth.txt Most important it is where the .ovpn files for the server connections are kept For example I would call: ope...

Re: system gradually slows down and eventually stops

I had that problem with 4Gb, but its almost all gone at 8Gb memory. What does seem to help is installing the autonice daemon, and changing priorities in the System Monitor. Might want to try a different VM software, as they can definitely gobble up resources. I am assuming cache = swap. If no swap f...

Re: System Configuration Issue

I decided to try and change the UUID with Tune2fs. It demanded first an e2fsck, which too a while on 1Tb. Seemed OK. Tune2fs took hours and finally exited without error , or for that matter changing the UUID. No luck either with the -Q option to avoid the sector checks. Tried GParted. Also required ...

Re: Cannot chroot because Fish-Shell

In trying to reinstall grub today of a drive, and using a Bullseye LiveDVD (on a target Buster system) I found that for the first time ever (iy seems) chroot actually did work!HP Code: ~ # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt ~ # mount -o bind /dev /mnt ~ # mount -o bind /dev/pts /mnt/dev/pts ~ # mount -o bind /pro...

Re: Debian Boot Problem

ATA bus error. Maybe a faulty SATA port, connector, cable or drive. Indeed, cheap connectors are notoriously unreliable. However, the drive should be checked on another machine, and if all is well, and connectors and ports can be ruled out - I have come across a fifth possibility, much harder to di...

Re: Searching a specific about installing debian

I believe OP is looking for https://cgit.gentoo.org/proj/localepurge.git/commit/ Beware: This hasnt been updated in nearly 9 years. I used this many years ago, with no problems. However in the interim UTF8 has proliferated, and it is possible the program might drag in some if its files, and possibly...

Re: Cannot chroot because Fish-Shell

I do not believe the problem is related to fish-shell. (Whateverr that is!).

I use the standard (bash) shell, and chroot always fails with that error also.
Cannot find /bin/bash

Apparently a common- issue, with no known solutions I have found that work.

Re: System Configuration Issue

Yes. There is a typo. SDD is the new Linux drive, SDC is Win7. I need new glasses! The basic problem is this: The system is only booting with the BAD DRIVE at SDA1, and the Cloned Dock Drive at SDD. All activity is occurring at the Dock Drive. The problem is that both drives share the same UUID. And...

Re: Cyber attack spreads worldwide

Passwords? Pointless. Its not the way things work these days. RATs (Remote Access Trojans) are used to infect a system, and send out screenshots/key logs. My XP systems are the safest. I havent seen a booger in years that will work with them. Even the old scumware cant phone home anymore. IPs long g...

Re: Leaving systemd...

While I have absolutely zero love for systemd, over the years it has become just another added Linux annoyance. The alternatives mean leaving the Debian ecosystem, which is not something feasible for me at this time. Devuan is nice, but it gave me issues with power management. My solution to the iss...

System Configuration Issue

My Linux Buster primary install is on SDA1 (1Tb). I was on a prolonged Win project for a month, and when I rebooted into Buster it started giving me problems by not booting into the GUI. A quick test shows that SMART was stating it was approaching failure. E2fsck had hundreds of repairs. I booted ba...

I've also run into this problem with NTFS storage.

Is there a way to use rsync with writing to a tar file?

Is there any way to recompile Wayland to allow root access?

There are plenty of valid reasons for GUI access as root.

Re: Buster Memory

The problem I am looking at is *getting rid* of the newer versions from Bullseye and replacing them with Buster 10.9. Preferably on an automatic basis. I just dont know for sure what packages are involved. So say I have foo-11.0 installed. I want to replace it with foo-10.9. Synaptic doesnt seem to ...

Re: Wouldn't it be possible to create a virus for Linux

The proper term should be *malware*. The four main categories are virii, worms, and trojans, and exploits. Each do different things, and should not be confused. In Win the main problem is trojans, since the OS itself is essentially a virus/trojan/exploit as it tries to ensure that the user does not ...

Re: Snap Package Installation

I found that snaps install server software by default, and deliberately try to block any user access to their files. Pure evil, as stated.

My solution was to get the source for the package i wanted from git, and compile it, and install to /opt.

Re: root permissions

@CwF I fully agree that security 'features' are a bit extreme, and while perfectly fine for enterprise systems are an absolute turn off for single user systems and networks. I'm rebuilding a system now so file and user 'security' issues cost me more time and annoyance than any malware attack on Wind...

Buster Memory [Solved]

Running Buster 10.9 on an ancient Opteron C2D. The issue I am having is that memory usage steadily climbs when doing file transfers in both mc and doublecmd, and only slowly comes down when aborted. After only a a few gigs it starts to throttle the machine while filling up RAM and Swap. This does no...

Re: Drive letters [Solved]

Well, the issue didnt start until Buster was installed! And i was hoping solution would have Linux utils to fix it, since Win utilities failed to work. However, the post, where it was - was productive. Especially as issues on dual booting should *NOT* be considered 'Off Topic'. The solution is here:...
