Re: Latest minidlna update - trashes config

Did you update with synaptic? APT should ask what to do with the configuration file but I don't know if the question is seen for a GUI upgrade. Fair point - I tend to use Webmin to manage updates on that server, so it may have made a decision for me. Like I said, nothing lost (no need to go to back...

Latest minidlna update - trashes config

Just a heads up that the latest minidlna release - minidlna (1.2.1+dfsg-2+deb10u1) buster-security; urgency=high - manages to trash your minidlna.conf and replace it with a default version. Your original config is saved under /etc/minidlna.conf.dpkg-old so not a big deal to recover. However it's a n...

Re: Buster version of dropbear changed (cryptroot-unlock mes

Possible explanation here https://matt.ucc.asn.au/dropbear/CHANGES - Re-enable printing MOTD by default, was lost moving from options.h. Thanks to zciendor E2A: xxxx@DellDesktop:~/tmp$ dropbear -V Dropbear v2018.76 So hopefully when v79 is packaged with Debian, the problem is fixed. E2A: And here's ...

Re: Buster version of dropbear changed (cryptroot-unlock mes

Does /etc/initramfs-tools/etc/motd exist on your system ? If yes, the hook script just copies it into the initramfs. If no, it creates one with the expected message. No it doesn't. But I still don't see the message. That's assuming we are looking at the /etc on my machine, not the /etc that gets bu...

[SOLVED} update borked "suspend" settings - system unusable.

After yesterdays update to Linux 4.19.0-10-amd64 on x86_64 via the repositorys my system has become unusable. Whatever has been fixed has broken the "Do not suspend" instructions and I cannot seem to disable suspend. I have tried: dconf write /org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/power:sleep-...

[SOLVED]motd query

Following on from this post: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=146890 is seems I am not seeing the message I was seeing because the process that builds initrams is missing/leaving out the motd file which has the message in it. So my question is what has changed to move/delete this fil...

Re: Buster version of dropbear changed (cryptroot-unlock mes

OK, so a bit of further digging reveals that the message appears to be originating in a file in the "cryptsetup" package in Debian. The initramfs part has been refactored so that the stretch file ~/initramfs/cryptroot-unlock-hook is now ~/initiramfs/hooks/cryptroot-unlock In that file is t...

Re: Buster version of dropbear changed (cryptroot-unlock mes

Well I don't know either. Just had to reboot again, and once again noticed it's missing - also missing from the "help" text. So if anyone else is following a guide on setting up SSH access to allow a remote drive to be decrypted before boot, then be aware that you won't be told the command...

Buster version of dropbear changed (cryptroot-unlock messge)

Upgraded from Stretch to Buster on a machine that has an encrypted disk. I had configured the boot process to allow the disk to be unlocked via SSH, using dropbear. When it was all setup back in 2017, on connecting via SSH, there was a terminal prompt that said "use cryptroot-unlock" to un...

gsettings not being retained or being reset/undone.

System: Debian 10, Gnome 3.30.0 being accessed remotely via NoMachine Problem: Despite setting screen timeout to "Never" (which works) after a period of 20 minutes, the on-screen notification about "Automatic Suspend" pops up. Intended solution: setting the org.gnome.settings-dae...

Re: Sigh. *Another* "Hunt the file" game with Gnome/Debian

For various reasons I want to fiddle around with a notification popup on my system. What are your reasons and what exactly are you trying to do? Remove a popup message with the system pops up just before it goes into suspend. Only in my case it never does, as I have disabled all power saving. But t...

Sigh. *Another* "Hunt the file" game with Gnome/Debian

For various reasons I want to fiddle around with a notification popup on my system. reading into all the guides, it seems there should be a file ... /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service Where I can start my digging. Of course, it's not there. Every other file is : ca.desr...

.bashrc irritation ?

I was trying to change my ssh/terminal settings to show a coloured prompt (useful when you have more than one server). However, something in the .bashrc I created is now messing up the terminals linewrapping, so that it's pretty unreadable beyond 20 characters. Also the path which should show in the...

Wired network still shows as up via powerline adapter

I'm running a Debian 10 machine with 2 network interfaces. eth2 and wlan1 I'm struggling through all the guides about bonding, and have discovered a wrinkle that means teh bonding failover won't work. The problem is that eth2 is using a powerline network adapter, which still shows as "up" ...

Re: Recreate disk arrangement after failure ?

Thanks for reply my aim was to ensure the directory structure of the new disk was a replica of the old. Which I have achieved. Both HDDs failed catastrophically - some sort of head failure as they both clicked when powered up, and refused to do anything else (looking in dmesg showed a string of read...

Recreate disk arrangement after failure ?

I have a machine that had a RAID1 directory setup as md0 Of course both drives failed within an hour of each other an are unrecoverable. Is it possible to retrieve the actual size and partitioning of the md0 array from somewhere else in the system ? I am hoping to replace a drive and recreate the ol...
