Re: [Off-Topic] The oldest file that you have in your possession?
Monday 9th October, 1995. It's a .bmp file of my signature that I scanned to insert into letters created in MS Word 2. Amazing thing is that I still use it. I may have some that are older but they'd be on archive media so not immediately accessible. Reasonably sure that there are some database files...

Re: Crashes and freezes in Linux with (some) Ryzen CPUs
so I'm considering switching over to Intel. It pains me to say so, but I'm leaning the same way, in thought anyway. I've been a staunch supporter of AMD since the 386DX40 which blitzed Intel's 486SX25. Similar situation when the Pentium came out and then all the way through to a few machines I have...

Re: [Discussion] How do you name your devices?
  Love the originality and creativity. I like order but even the original limiting to 8 characters has slipped a bit and then some devices insist on only being named what they call themselves. Re: Random order of disks
I haven't seen a way to ensure that every time you start the system, the order of the disks is the same... While I generally agree with steve_v 's response it does depend on your motherboard. On my desktop, and a couple of other PCs I have been successful in getting certain disks to consistently lo...

The fear of not being able to solve my own problem(s) and having to resort to public admission of my shortcomings by posting a question here.

Re: Crashes and freezes in Linux with (some) Ryzen CPUs
Appreciate your response, but..... Why didn't you examine a few of your Linux log files for an error code? And, ZERO, ZILCH, NOTHING, NADA in any log file. Absolutely no clues in any logs though. It was as though I'd simply turned off the power switch. Your problem may not be hardware specific, unle...

Re: [Discussion] Straw that broke the camel's back
Early 2014 and MS confirmed that support for XP was to finalise soon. In my business I had 15+ desktops, notebooks and a server all running XP. More at home. All licenced. Cheaper option was Win7, but that had a limited life and I'd bought a notebook with Win8 and absolutely hated it. So a cost of s...

Using Synaptic, navigate to Edit > Mark Packages by Task. Uncheck LXDE and check Gnome and Debian Desktop Environment. Hit OK.

Re: [Installation] Use KDE or XFCE
If you want more consistency in the way your programs look and work then KDE is the better choice. Even Gnome and GTK applications can look similar to native KDE. Want to change your window header and border colours? Easy in Plasma, not so easy in other desktops. Lots of other colours can be changed...

Crashes and freezes in Linux with (some) Ryzen CPUs
Couple of years ago, while sitting around waiting for some virus to peter out, I decided to do a major hardware upgrade on my main desktop. CPU was Ryzen 5 1600AF (2nd gen, 12nm, slightly detuned 2600) which for about $100 was amazing. Add a B450M motherboard from Aorus (Gigabyte) and 16GB RAM and I...

Re: I have the right default program and the wrong one launches.
If you right click on a folder, does it have an "Open With..." menu item? if so, select Dolphin and there should be a check box to always use that application to open. I don't use Mate however (it's weird). I use KDE Plasma and that's how it works here. Obviously your Preferred Applicatio...

Re: Staying with Debian 11
I moved my desktop to 12 after Syncthing would no longer work in the 11 edition. At the same time I moved two notebooks to Debian 12 and they've been rock solid but the desktop has issues. File server, media server and a couple of other desktops are still solid on 11 and I see no point in moving tho...

Re: GNOME introduces Mosaic window management
I don't really think everybody will agree with me. Haters gonna hate. Afraid I'm in the not agreeing faction. Hater? Maybe, Gnome just doesn't work for me. I use two monitors, each 1920 x 1200, so I have plenty of screen real estate. But I arrange windows according to priority (my priority, not som...

Re: Window Size at Program Start (Debian 12 kde)
Yes. One of my favourite features of KDE Plasma is the ability to set window size and position. Right click on the window titlebar then go to "More Actions > Configure Special Application Settings". From here you can set the size and position of the window when it opens, either in a fixed ...

MXLinux: Amazed at what those guys have done. If only they hadn't mucked about with permissions..... I'm curious: what have they done with permissions? In Debian I can do most things that need administrative privileges with sudo. Of course, some things do need root and, generally I agree with how t...

Re: Which is the worst distribution you have tried?
Robolinux. When I first wanted to move from XP with impending EOL I tried this. Then Debian based so most things actually worked, but run by a nutcase. No forum, no community and requests for support just brought insults and accusations. Ubuntu - for different reasons that might be posted. This was ...
