Re: Install of Buster to flash drive breaks HDD UEFI boot

I found some time to play around with this again. With rEFInd removed, The HDD booted directly, but Buster on the USB drive would not. I booted into Buster via rEFInd on a USB drive then again tried ... copy /boot/efi/EFI/debian/grubx64.efi as /boot/efi/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi ... and it worked. All I ...

Re: Install of Buster to flash drive breaks HDD UEFI boot

Thanks very much for the replies. Being very much a novice in UEFI matters, after reading '[FAQ] New system won't boot' and finding that things in my system were not exactly as described, I was still unsure how to add booting from the external USB drive. As GRUB was already installed I tried copy /b...

Re: Lightning calendar killed by Thunderbird upgrade to 60.3

I had assumed that as 5.4 was disabled it would have no effect.
After removing it and rebooting I have my calendar back.
The Extension is now showing as Lightning 6.2.3.
Many thanks, Steve.

[Solved] Lightning calendar killed by Thunderbird upgrade

I used Synaptic to upgrade my 64 bit Jessie 8.11 system and now the Lightning calendar is missing from the Thunderbird mail client. Thunderbird and Lightning are both now 1:60.3.0-1 ~ deb8u. Under Thunderbird Tools/Add-ons/Extensions, Lightning 5.4 is disabled and stated to be incompatible with Thun...

Re: Multisession data DVD incorrectly identified as blank

Many thanks, kevinthefixer, for attempting to replicate the problem and for suggesting it could be a hardware issue, despite playing videos OK. I cleaned the lens with a cotton bud dampened with distilled water and now the drive reads my backup disks just fine (and still plays videos). Kevinthefixed...

Re: Multisession data DVD incorrectly identified as blank

Thanks for the suggestion, kevinthefixer. The 64 bit Stretch live DVD identified all my disks as blank. I have discovered that 64 bit Jessie identifies a 32 bit Wheezy live DVD as blank (a single-session disc). The disc is correctly identified and accessed on my 32 bit machine running Wheezy. Can an...

Jessie - how to configure gnome-applets?

Using Gnome 3.14.1 Classic.
System installed from debian-8.7.1-amd64-DVD-1.iso.
I have installed gnome-applets via synaptic, but cannot discover how to add an applet to the panel. Alt + right-click on the panel has no effect. I have found nothing relevant in dconf or tweak tool.
Thanks for any advice.

Re: VirtualBox broken by system update

Over the last two years of running Debian I have received notifications of, I would guess, two or three kernel updates mixed in with others, and with every item including the new kernel preselected for installation each time. I could have deselected the backport kernel before allowing the other upda...

Re: VirtualBox broken by system update

Thanks Steve. I did not intend to upgrade to a backports kernel. I just accepted the recommended updates in the notification without reading it thoroughly. The 3.2 kernel is now an alternative entry in the GRUB menu. It boots OK into the Gnome Classic login screen, but on attempting to log in it goe...

Re: libdvdcss2 error with encrypted dvd

Before I take the plunge and downgrade, I am wondering whether the problem lies with VLC as I have the same problem with Totem Movie Playe...

libdvdcss2 error with encrypted dvd

I switched from Ubuntu 12.04 to Debian Wheezy 7.8 a few months ago. Under Ubuntu I could play region 2 DVDs in VLC or Totem Movie Player without problems. These DVDs will not play in either player under Debian. If I run 'vlc /dev/dvd' in the terminal I get: VLC media player 2.0.6 Twoflower (revision...

You were exactly right fsmithred! It was Nautilus attempting to mount the encrypted volume which caused the failure. After plugging in the drive, so long as I did not click on athe USB drive volume in Nautilus, your suggested commands worked. The LVM group name of the volume on the USB drive is Ubun...

Re: How to mount clone of encrypted LVM volume?

To inhibit automounting of USB drives in my Debian Wheezy / Gnome3 classic system, I go to Applications/System Tools/dconf Editor and uncheck org/gnome/desktop/media-handling/automount. Without the USB drive plugged in ls -l /dev/mapper returns: total 0 crw------T 1 root root 10, 236 Jan 10 18:49 co...
