..<snip>..the creation of the bootable USB drive still required a Windows installation somewhere..<snip> Apparently, the USB drive is not necessarily 'bootable' in case of similar HP tool, even though it did create an EFI directory on the drive. Re: How to use "testdisk" for recovery "/home"?

Haven't done it myself, but I think you can create a partial image of your partition with ddrescue (gddrescue, telling it 'Bytes to SKIP' + 'Size to copy' - see 'man ddrescue'), then run photorec on that partial disk image. This will work only if you are sure about the area on which your files needi...

Re: Recover Bricked USB

Formatting, dd, testdisk, low-level format, disk repairing software tools etc. all will work only if the flash memory inside the device becomes 'readable' first (at hardware level). That is, a 'Communication Link' between the flash memory and the computer is the first and foremost requirement for su...

Re: Recover Bricked USB

First, it could be that the control electronics on the device are damaged.. +1 The "pulled mid-transfer" thing may just be a coincidence, or the internal circuitry (most likely the flash memory) of the drive might have been too sensitive. I usually get this "unable to enumerate USB d...

Re: Weird situation, looking for feedback.

Has anyone seen this type of thing before.. Just sharing a similar experience - I remember an old custom build desktop pc whose 250 GB seagate barracuda 7200 rpm got into a similar situation. The previously installed windows xp on it started crashing frequently, throwing multiple I/O errors everyti...

So it was you behind those 700 MB 'dll' files in windows directories. The customers did look sane as they claimed.

Re: Wired Gigabit Ethernet only delivering 100Mb/sec

I don't think Network Manager can be the culprit here. Because any connection management tool is not supposed to interfere with connection speed unless you explicitly tell it to (like the workaround you used). What you found is NM's capability to force a command/parameter, just like the three other ...

Re: Wired Gigabit Ethernet only delivering 100Mb/sec

EDIT: but a udev rule is probably the way to go, for example: # /etc/udev/rules.d/10-autoneg.rules ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="enp0s25", RUN+="/sbin/ethtool -s enp0s25 autoneg on" (Untested) The /etc/rc.local method has always appealed to me as ...

Re: Wired Gigabit Ethernet only delivering 100Mb/sec

Where are the initial settings located for the Ethernet hardware? I'd like to correct this "autoneg off" problem at the source, rather than patch down-stream. It should be 'on' by default. I don't know if something is changed in Debian 10 or the kernel module to cause this. As you suggest...

Re: r8169 and slow network speed

I wonder if you should not try r8168-dkms (8.047.02-1) from SID. Just tried. No difference Just for confirmation, can you post the outputs of ethtool and ethtool -i with the new driver? Plus, the output of - lsmod | grep 8168 There's an even newer one here, though I haven't tried compiling it : htt...

Re: Learning how to use linux

Isn't there a guide that's just as good or even better than this .pdf? I believe no single guide can suit the needs of all 'Beginners'. Re: Very slow download speed from network

I also tried "switching to software-based encryption by creating a file at /etc/modprobe.d/rt.conf" This is for a Ralink wireless controller, not your Realtek ethernet controller. I doubt that this kind of controller does any encryption. Indeed, that trick is not applicable to the driver ...
