Re: Wordpress debian repository or latest from wordpress sit

Thank you for this information @acewiza! Very useful. Also, to complement this information a little bit, the document I stumbled upon today `vim /usr/share/doc/wordpress/README.Debian.gz` is excellent and describes which permissions to use, as well as how to Alias the `wp-content` folder in Apache t...

Re: Wordpress debian repository or latest from wordpress sit

debman and kedaha, thanks for your replies. Appreciate the feedback as a brand new wordpress user on Debian. I use wordpress from Debian's main repository because I prefer the stable version and have an aversion to continual updates. I don't need anything fancy and just stick with the default themes...

Wordpress debian repository or latest from wordpress site

Hello all! I've deployed a Wordpress instance using the wordpress package in the stable (stretch) repos. I installed it on a cloud instance last night using Nginx. I'm glad that it's up and running as I enjoy and trust Debian's security updates that come from the project. I have been testing out my ...

Re: RVM alternatives that follow the 'debian way'

Thanks for your reply millpond. I had thought that this post would just float to the bottom down to oblivion. :) Appreciate your feedback on how you got this to work nicely on Debian. When I setup this post a couple of months ago, I was completly new to Ruby, coming from a more Python/Java backgroun...

RVM alternatives that follow the 'debian way'

Hello everyone. I am currently jumping into some development of Ruby on Rails, and the program I'm following suggests to install RVM. However, it points to a script, and then doing a bunch of things in terminal to get it to work correctly. I can do it, but I want to keep Debian in control of package...

Re: Skylake Screen Resolution problems Debian 8.x

Skylake should also need the newer mesa (added since this thread started) in jessie-backports for full performance, which you can set up by following these instructions: https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=1185 Also test before and after the fix and reboot by installing inxi and looking ...

Re: Securely Installing Brackets [SOLVED] -OR- Alternate Edi

I wonder if the Atom text editor from github would be a good alternative. In my search for an answer to the original question, saw that Atom also ran into a problem similar to the one that brackets had when installing a deb package. Not sure if they fixed it or not by adding the dependency in a loc...

Re: Securely Installing Brackets [SOLVED] -OR- Alternate Edi

I ended up solving this. Although not sure if this is the most secure way, it is much better than adding the old package and having it available systemwide. I used these resources. https://brbsix.github.io/2015/10/29/fix-missing-libgcrypt11-for-brackets-text-editor/ http://unix.stackexchange.com/que...

Securely Installing Brackets [SOLVED] -OR- Alternate Editor

Hello all! Am interested in using Brackets on Debian because a web dev program that I am using currently "strongly suggests" it. However I know there is an old dependency that the .deb package requires from debian. Specifically libgcrypt11, and currently all my systems use Jessie. I've rea...

Re: What do my Debian Community peers think of SELinux?

First off, I appreciate everyone's posts and opinions. This has been VERY informative in the sense of looking at things from a different perspective. i.e. "hard core audits" vs "casual perusing" of code. The problem with that line of reasoning is that if the code is complex enoug...

Re: What do my Debian Community peers think of SELinux?

eor2004, thanks for your comment. Do you use any kind of Mandatory Access Control (MAC) software instead? I'd agree with you on a couple of all valid points. PITA - Agreed. All of my systems lack SELinux, except the ones that I'm using to study the RHCSA. I don't think I'd like to have SELinux and h...

Re: What do my Debian Community peers think of SELinux?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Well, I've got some time before deploying, so, I thought I'd ask the community, based off of that do my research, then take action.

I might go to the arch site and post something but I'll probably wait a bit.

What do my Debian Community peers think of SELinux?

Hello everyone! I've been an avid user for a little bit over a year. Debian Stable+Backports on my laptops, and Sid on my desktop. Recently, have been working towards an RHCSA to add to my resume and using Debian my KVM host, with 3 RHEL guests running when needed for certification purposes. I am le...

Re: Finding Root Cause of Full System Freeze. Video/NVIDIA?

Sorry for the long time in getting back. I had a lot of travel for work. So, after all that troubleshooting, I concluded that it was my power supply. Mostly, I was seeing X crash sometimes and not being able to come back up.The journalctl output, pointed to NVIDIA failure (which could have been the ...

Re: Finding Root Cause of Full System Freeze. Video/NVIDIA?

yes it is networked. I do try to SSH into it, but I am not able to. SSH server is up and running normally by the way. :)

Liquorix kernel - Ahh, thanks for the link! :D

I am using 4.5 kernel from backports.

Will definitely read up on REISUB and try that out on next freeze.

Re: Finding Root Cause of Full System Freeze. Video/NVIDIA?

Thanks for the reply Bulkley. LoL, definitely pulling my hair out. :) Thanks for the link. I'll read about REISUB and try it some point once I get a crash again, which is not as easily reproducible as you would think. One thing I did forget to mention is that to reboot my system when this happens, I...

Finding Root Cause of Full System Freeze. Video/NVIDIA?

Greetings all! Been using Debian for past couple of months, migrated all my systems but one to this distro. It is absolutely amazing, and I'd like to keep it as my main distro on all home and personal production systems. But I'm having issues on one particular system. I'm getting random freezes when...

Re: Problem using kdump-tools for a forced/staged panic

I had some headway between yesterday and today. I re-installed a system (seconday laptop) to see if I would have issues capturing kdump output. Fedora was my OS of choice. I set everything up correctly there, and Alt+F2'd to a console screen and did the forced panic. I got a similar result... EXCEPT...

Problem using kdump-tools for a forced/staged panic

Hello everyone. I'm having some issues creating output from kdump-tools. (Initially to diagnose some system freezes when using wine, but now I can't a staged panic to work and provide proper output.) I initially started following what is stated at this link: https://www.bentasker.co.uk/documentation...
