Re: Who dual-boots Debian & FreeBSD (or other BSD) & why?
my laptop wireless that I otherwise use to connect. Really? You can't start with connecting wirelessly and then finish up with speaking of security. Wireless is insecure and always will be. So potentially is any hop/link (wired or wireless). But that does not alter that you can still communicate po...

Re: Who dual-boots Debian & FreeBSD (or other BSD) & why?
OpenBSD doesn't support my laptop wireless that I otherwise use to connect. Isn't as secure as my Linux setup either and the overheads of it attempting to be secure weigh heavily upon performance. I no longer multi-boot, just live usb boot and run in ram (usb disconnected after bootup). Exact same i...

Re: What does your non-Debian desktop look like?
Enjoying EasyOS 1.0 (similar, but different, to Puppy Linux). Runs from a squashed filesystem (sfs), with a folder as the save area layered on top of that. Includes tools to make sfs copies of that save area, so you can use those to quickly/easily roll backwards/forwards to any desired snapshot. htt...

Re: Overlayfs (Merging folders)
Indeed live-boot uses squashed filesystems (sfs) and overlays. Main read only sfs at the bottom, a rw save area on top. Looks down and if the file is in the save area then that is used, otherwise reads from the ro sfs. whiteout files (.wh) are used to indicate if a file has been deleted i.e. still i...

Re: Compiling the rt2870 driver for chipset
I feel embarrassed for the OP reading this. Don't be. The Puppy forum allowed non-Pup alternatives to post and degenerated into a mess that is more inclined to confuse rather than help. Post non FreeBSD on the FreeBSD forum, or non Debian on the Debian forum etc. etc. and you'll get blasted off - f...

Re: Single User Security
The main appeal of OpenBSD and a reason for why I moved over to that from Debian is that X runs as user and you can set all setuid's off for 'others', not have the X user in group wheel, no su/sudo etc. and in effect have it contained. Run all root commands from a tty/console. If it really really is...

Re: What does your non-Debian desktop look like?
After Jessie, I moved over to OpenBSD and have no regrets whatsoever. Much more prefer the Unix-like style, never really took to systemD. I can't say anything specific about this system, because I haven't tried it and I think on my hardware it won't work in the near future because it doesn't suppor...

Seemed like only weeks ago when they were saying the global population had risen to 7 billion ... now 7.7Bn. My guess is that as the world becomes just one large village that a biological crisis will spread rapidly across the globe. Many are aware that the horrors of WW1 saw millions killed (around ...
