Re: Unable to mount external USB stick
I did have a go at testdisk, but each time I tried, it kept saying "no partitions found". Maybe I was using it incorrectly?julian67 wrote:testdisk will rescue the data from pretty much any filesystem, working or broken.

Re: Unable to mount external USB stick
Yes, gparted is giving me the same info. I have been able to retrieve all my files using a friends Windows PC plus some software call PC Inspector. Is there no software for Linux which can extract files the way PC Inspector can for Windows?

Re: Unable to mount external USB stick
You have to mount the partitions, not the whole device, so the command should look like this: pmount /dev/sda1 for the first partition or sdaX for the others, where X is the partition number. There was only 1 partition on the stick yesterday, don't know what happened today: debian:/home/mashcaster#...

Re: Unable to mount external USB stick
Plug the stick in, become root and then find out what device it is with the command: fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 1031 MB, 1031798784 bytes 32 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1015 cylinders Units = cylinders of 1984 * 512 = 1015808 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 This doesn't look like a partition table Prob...

Re: Connection problem
Got it working. Apparently Debian blocks all network connections by default. So I first enabled network connections, then gave my client machine rights to access the database. To enable networking, you have to comment out the bind-address line in the file /etc/mysql/my.cnf then restart mysql /etc/in...

Re: Connection problem
It's a 100% private network with no access to the outside world, and the outsideworld has no access to it either. So there are no gateway/routers. Just desktop pcs and servers connrcted via switches. Will it be the mysql server with needs to allow access to itself?

Re: HowTo Build a Package from Source the Smart Way
Building a DEB is very easy to do and it's a shame that the members of this forum do not advocate it. If you've never built a DEB before, then try building Backintime . It only takes a minute or two, so it's a great exercise. In general, building a DEB from Debian-ized source is a simple four-step ...
