Re: [Software] Another Debian install, another Redshift problem
dlu2021 is correct that XFCE and lightDM should have little to no Wayland support. There are two parts to his post. They are both disconnected. They are: xfce doesn't use wayland Now, the first is a weird sentence which actually means "Xfce doesn't default to Wayland through LightDM". Say...

Re: [Software] Another Debian install, another Redshift problem
Probably misconfigured Gammastep configuration! Redshift I have tested and working on X11, but in bullseye it maybe has some bugs. I can help you with Redshift if you want to post its error output. Erm, did you read the OP properly? I didn't say Redshift was not working on X11, I was saying it wasn...

Re: [Software] Another Debian install, another Redshift problem
Then why am I getting this error message when attempting to run gammastep?
Code: Select all
Error: Could not connect to wayland display, exiting
Error: Failed to start adjustment method: wayland

[Solved] Another Debian install, another Redshift problem
I recently reinstalled Debian 11 with Xfce but cannot get Redshift or ANY nightlight program like gammastep or sct to work. They always just say "can't connect to Wayland". Are they any night light programs that work under Wayland? EDIT: Failing that, I would happily switch back to X11, bu...

Re: upgraded to Bookworm on 2-13-22 , kernel question
@sunrat thanks for that hint " apt list --installed linux-image " so I googled and came up with https://techviewleo.com/how-to-install-linux-kernel-on-debian/ the only thing that takes about 10 seconds to start working is my Sound BlaxterX g5. but it's working so I'm a happy camper Ah yes...

Re: Pictures folder has disappeared from /home
Using the command
I was able to locate the missing folder, it was in Public/Pictures
No idea how it ended up there. But I'm glad it's back.
Code: Select all
find | grep screenshot
No idea how it ended up there. But I'm glad it's back.

Re: Pictures folder has disappeared from /home
OK, the folders are back after looking at this link: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1163706/pictures-folder-disappeared-in-ubuntu-19-04 However, they are empty. It looks like the old ones may have gone for good. I have no idea why this happened. Somehow config/user-dirs.dirs got corrupted, possibly...

Pictures folder has disappeared from /home [SOLVED]
I've looked around the internet for a solution to this and I can't find one as of yet. I went into .config and opened user-dirs.dirs, the contents of which are below: # This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update # If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're # interested in....

Re: Installing sid via netinst
Ok I understand. Is there a way to let debian stable use a newer alsa version than the one provided in the buster repositories then? You mean Bullseye? Since that is the current stable, only released a few days ago. I think you may find - this is where my experience drops out - that the issue is no...

Re: Installing sid via netinst
I think, if you want a learning experience with sid, that a Chromebook is one of the worst machines you could do it on, and not one which is very representative of other bare metal installs. It will give you more issues than normal, not all of which will be fixable.

Re: Installing sid via netinst
Chromebooks are horrendous to install Linux on. Secondly, since you are new to Linux, sid is not something you should be installing. It will likely create more problems than it will solve. I can also nearly guarantee you that audio will not work either. The only distro I have found to work with audi...

Re: move my installation from buster to bulleyes
It just beggars belief that some people running Debian don't know how to search for upgrade instructions. Here you go, OP. https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html It looks to me like you didn't update Buster beforehand. Here is a simple version of how to upgra...

Re: Leaving systemd...
:) a curious question... what is it with systemd you don't like so you want to leave it? Just little curious nothing more. :) It's probably the biggest argument in the history of Linux, be glad you missed it. It's basically old school vs new school and the whole debate should just be consigned to t...

Re: Cyber attack spreads worldwide
I recently went to a government agency where I live and to my surprise and amazement they were using Windows XP on all the computers, these computers have sensitive information, they're asking for trouble by not updating the software and/or hardware, a real shame! Security incidents are actually ex...

Steve, you're making a lot of assumptions and I don't care to discuss this, it's over. I ran Slackware problem-free [relatively] for 18 months before moving on. If you really want to see the gory details of what happened, fill your boots. I'm out

Re: Leaving systemd...
Adding extra hard drives [internal] is the biggest issue I have faced on a non systemd distro [Slackware]. I won't go into why, but if you're thinking of adding more hard drives, and you are not used to the persistent naming process, you will have a hell of a time doing so. systemd just makes everyt...

I refer you to my discussion here - I know you're not necessarily talking about security issues, but this is definitely related to needlessly updating things: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/blog/lysander666-1046616/slackware-unix-plasma-and-nethack-a-discussion-based-retrospective-of-the-1...

Re: Debian installation errors/freezes
I have an inkling that this is a hardware issue, inasmuch as your system may not meet the hardware requirements. It may on paper, but we all know that theory and practise is different when it comes to these things. Could you give full specs? Now, the official documentation says: A Pentium 4, 1GHz sy...
