MATE: terminal bell in left and right speakers
Sometimes in MATE, the terminal bell will sound in the left speaker if the xterm generating it is on the left side of the screen. Same for the right. Sometimes the bell is mono. Where is the setting that controls this? I really don't like the bell being mono at all times.

Re: Unable to change background image in MATE 1.16
Sometimes after a reboot or logout-login, MATE will refuse to let the background image be changed from the default blue-grey Debian swirl. The component resposible for setting backgrounds has probably left a trace of error in ~/.xsession-errors. You can look into this file right after a failure for...

Unable to change background image in MATE 1.16
Sometimes after a reboot or logout-login, MATE will refuse to let the background image be changed from the default blue-grey Debian swirl. None of the usual means of changing the background image work (xsetroot or gsettings). In fact, when I query gsettings for what is in the background, it reports ...

Re: MATE 1.18 in /usr/local/
Thanks. I figured out that a separate repo is provided at https://github.com/mate-desktop/debian-packages specifically for making debs. You have to do it one at a time in the proper order (figure that out for yourself) and install the debs as you make them to build the next one. And it's hardcoded t...

MATE 1.18 in /usr/local/
Would someone please explain how to get MATE 1.18 working when I build it from source and install it in /usr/local? MATE, as installed through APT, was removed from my system prior to doing this. I added /usr/local/share/xsessions to the sessions-director path in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. This allo...

Re: MATE: Screensaver / Power-Management options don't work
I was running Jessie and performed an upgrade according to https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-upgrade-debian-8-jessie-to-debian-9-stretch. The notebook is a Thinkpad T420. Under Jessie, all power management utilities worked perfectly out of the box. Mate 1.8 was installed prior to this. After the upgrad...

MATE: Screensaver / Power-Management options don't work
I've upgraded a notebook to Stretch and use MATE. No matter what the settings in Screensaver or Power-Management, the screen will ALWAYS be locked when the idle timer times out. Closing the notebook's lid will ALWAYS cause the machine to go into suspend mode. Has anyone else noticed this? What's goi...

Re: MATE in /usr AND in /usr/local
This is a regular Stretch install. $PATH lists /usr/local/bin before /usr/bin.

MATE in /usr AND in /usr/local
I'm interested in tinkering with components of MATE and testing them while leaving the APT-installed versions alone. I've built and installed the components from the Github repos and installed them to /usr/local/. I can't figure out how to load applets from /usr/local. In particular, can someone tel...
