Re: [Off-Topic] The oldest file that you have in your possession?

My oldest files are from April 18th, 1990. They are a program and source code to generate a saying everytime it is called. The program is for DOS.

Re: [Discussion] How do you name your devices?

For desktops and notebooks, I use "translated" brand names. With two HP's, one is Happy and the other is Hope. A self-built desktop with an MSI motherboard is Missy, and a second one with a SilverStone case is called... Zilversteen (which is Silverstone in Dutch). My servers are characters...

Re: ( closed )Trying to install debian without all bloatware

There is no bloatware in Debian. There is in a certain closed-source operating system from Redmond. Further discussion pointless. Really!! If i install Debian Xfce and i get Libre office as default office apps.. but i dont want Libre office.. Then libre office is Bloat. I wont mention all packages ...

Re: "Notifications are currently provided by 'Xfce Xfce Notify Daemon' instead of Plasma."

I suggest you start with

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge xfce4-notifyd
This will remove the XFCE4 notify daemon and all its dependencies. Control should then revert back to the notification system built into your Plasma desktop.

Re: What about Audacity 3 in Debian 12? And about Tenacity?

Audacity:
v 3.4.2 in Sid and Testing
v 3.2.4 in Stable.
Tenacity:
not in de Debian repositories. Since the Tenacity team has decided to offer AppImages, chances are nobody is working on a deb for Debian.

Re: XFCE: Display Settings Popping up all the time

In the screen configuration applet, choose 'Advanced' and switch off the bottom option if it's on. Also, select "do nothing" for what to do if it detects a new screen.

One of my spare desktops is a Intel NUC with only 4 GiB of RAM. I use Debian with XFCE on it without any problems.

Re: [Software] Replace Pipewire with Pulseaudio | Bookworm/Gnome

Apple Airpods need specific codecs to work. Apple isn't big on supporting established standards and protocols, because they want you to use Apple hardware exclusively. With Gnome in Debian 12, it isn't possible to uninstall pipewire and use pulseaudio instead. I think it can be done when you don't u...

Re: [Software] How do I choose fastest closest mirror

Select 'Settings', then 'Packet Sources'. In the window, you see an option to "Download from main server". Click on that. Now choose 'Other...' and you get a screen in which you can click a button to "select the best server".

I"m always suspicious when an open source browser is made "much safer" and the result is closed source.
One should be aware that chromium + spyware = Chrome, and chromium + spyware = Microsoft Edge.

Re: Blocking Youtube ads

uBlock Origin will block all served ads coming from "external" adservers which it can identify. That works flawslessly both on Firefox and on Chromium. However, Youtube videos have also "inline ads", which are ads inserted into the videostream as if it is all the same source. The...

Re: About APT and packages

I'm not a fan of flatpaks and snap packages. Yes, you can get new and updated software sooner and easier that way, but there's more insecurity. Flat and snap packs are not protected like the Debian repositories are. Almost anyone can create and upload software there, and that's an invitation for mal...

Re: rsync- how to add only new files?

For an incremental backup, use

Code: Select all

rsync -vau source/ destination/
If you don't want a lot of text, leave the 'v' out. If you don't want to copy new files and only update changes to existing files, loose the 'a'.
The -vau stands for: verbose, add, update.
