Re: Backup from Ubuntu to Debian

I use Duplicity (Deja Dup is a front-end for Duplicity). I have used it to transfer files from Ubuntu to Debian and back again. But I have specific folders backed up. My Firefox and Thunderbird profiles, Documents and Pictures folders, and my GnuCash folder. I haven't had any problem with this. I do...

Re: [Discussion] Do you use Two Factor Authentication (2FA)?

I intend to go to Authy because they will back up your codes in the cloud so I won't have the problem of forgetting to transfer them over to a new phone. Turns out that Google Authenticator will do the same thing now plus it's easier to transfer your accounts to a new phone so I'm staying with Goog...

Re: [Discussion] Do you use Two Factor Authentication (2FA)?

I use Google Authenticator. I keep meaning to use Authy but keep forgetting. I too had a couple of accounts that I got locked out of when I switched phones and forgot to transfer over my 2FA to the new phone. One, NextCloud, I never used and so they eventually just canceled the account. The other, a...

Re: Mailing lists for newcomers/non-techies

Hello! After the problem with Debian 12.5 update and nvidia proprietary drivers i started to look for detailed release notes, but all i have found on the web is this - https://www.debian.org/News/2024/20240210 , and there are no warnings about possible problems. Can anyone verify that these are the...

Re: Should I recommend Debian to a friend who has no Linux experience?

And there is no way a newbie like him will manage to install it the first time around, without reading their wiki. Especially since their install is command line only. To me, that's an important point for him to experience, having to read beforehand so he will have a better understanding of what he...

Re: [Hardware] Setting up Hibernate and Sleep on PC

This worked for me on an old computer that wouldn't wake from sleep via mouse or keyboard. https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1968487 From the man systemd-rc-local-generator Support for /etc/rc.local is provided for compatibility with specific System V systems only. However, it is strongly r...

Re: Are most or all security flaws fixed in Debian? Or is it like Ubuntu where many are not?

So it turns out that I was aware of this. I just didn't recognize it this time. But it seems to happen more than I thought. Chromium on Debian went through the same thing for a while. The maintainer at the time, as he put it, didn't have time to maintain it so it was really out of date. I found the ...

Re: Are most or all security flaws fixed in Debian? Or is it like Ubuntu where many are not?

Found a forum thread with a similar subject. The opinion of a couple of respected members was that perhaps this is the wrong place to ask. Being members of a Debian user forum and not security professionals members are not likely to know the answer. But here is the thread. A bit of fireworks lol. ht...

Re: Are most or all security flaws fixed in Debian? Or is it like Ubuntu where many are not?

Right. For example, eCryptfs is in Debian repo even though it hasn't had active development in more than six years. Thanks. Still don't understand the point of the thread. The issue is well known and affects all Linux distros. I didn't really know that for sure. I had read an article about "th...

Re: Are most or all security flaws fixed in Debian? Or is it like Ubuntu where many are not?

There's a big difference between security flaws in Debian and security flaws in apps available in Debian's repos. I'd be astonished if anyone on Team Debian is trying to keep the second stable clean. And, do let's bear in mind, most security flaws are theoretical. Reports of such flaws causing prob...

Are most or all security flaws fixed in Debian? Or is it like Ubuntu where many are not?

TL;DR In Ubuntu, apparently not all security issues in Universe are fixed. I was wondering if all security issues are fixed in Debian. Bearing in mind that some have lower priorities than others. Here's what got me thinking about this. Here's a post from Wilders Security forums where Summerheat says...

What is simple cross-site scripting in Debian Severity Levels?

The Debian CVE Severity levels refer to simple cross-site scripting (XSS) as an example of a medium cve. medium : For anything which permits code execution after user interaction. Local privilege escalation vulnerabilities are in this category as well, or remote privilege escalation if it's constrai...

Re: Debian 12 Pipewire: Volume keeps resetting to 40%?

Hello. I don't think is good idea. Audio group is used for direct access to sound hardware, for all sessions. It is still required to make ALSA and OSS work in remote sessions. Also used in JACK to give users realtime processing permissions. Thanks. I probably should have mentioned the direct acces...

Re: Debian 12 Pipewire: Volume keeps resetting to 40%?

This is likely a different problem but I'll mention it as the workaround is easy. On a fresh install of Bookworm the volume would often reset to about 40% after a logout/login. Not after a reboot. Sometimes it would show 100% and dummy output so no sound. This is on Gnome. Anyway the workaround was ...

Re: [Discussion] Which is more secure? Firefox or Firefox-ESR?

The trend continues. Looking at Firefox 118.0, 119.0, 120.0 and the corresponding Firefox-ESR versions 115.3.0, 115.4.0, 115.5.0, the Firefox versions have more vulnerabilities than the Firefox-ESR versions. And it's not because Firefox-ESR is not getting patched. I checked out the "extra"...
