Re: Debian 9.4: touchpad not detected.
I don't see any reference to the touchpad and the BIOS there.

Re: apt-get remove: Package 'libreoffice' is not installed.
Well I did apt-get remove --purge libreoffice-* apt-get clear [unknown command] apt-get autoremove and this did it. At last I am free of a thing which only is of use to office people. Instead the installer (firmware-netinst.iso) does not install such essential a thing as the GNU compiler and linker.

Re: Debian 9.4: touchpad not detected.
I reset the BIOS to default settings and nothing happened. In /proc/bus/input/devices there is no instance of unknown (I looked with less -i, case insensitive).

Debian 9.4: touchpad not detected.
Hi: This is an Acer Aspire One 1-431. The touchpad does not respond. Worst, I think the OS does not detect it. I have tried tried looking in dmesg, inxi -Fx, lspci, lsusb, lshw, hwinfo and dmidecode w/various parameters for the strings 'mouse', 'synaptics' and 'touchpad' with no results. Also 'xinpu...

Well, when I plug the battery cord into the jack the speaker beeps (or when I unplug it, don't remember well).

vi does not beep when switching to command mode.
Hi: when switching from insert to command mode vi used to beep the loudspeaker (bell char, 0x07). The loudspeaker in my machine works fine. However it is muted all the editing session through. This is Debian 9. There is one thing. If I issued 'vi --version' I get VIM - Vi IMproved 8.0. Somehow vi se...

Thanks. A bit redundant, isn't it.

Re: Message "You are not subscribed to any forums".
But there is also a box "Notify me when a reply is posted" when I post, below the white window. Are the two things equivalent?

No running instance of Xfce4-panel was found.
Every time I start Xfce 4 the panels are missing and a window with that notification appears. Then I press the button 'Execute' on the window and the panels reappear. Possible cause? Xfce 4 was the only DE I chose during installation. Version is 9 (Stretch).

Re: Disable X at boot time so that the system boots in text
You need to enable multi-user login. sudo systemctl set-default multi-user.target To revert: sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target Be aware that if you're using GNOME as a DE, this will disable the lock screen option from the aggragatar, since that option is enabled through GDM. Thanks a lot....

Re: Starting X ad libitum.
It's simple. When the boot sequence ends I want to be in a text console. I do not want the boot sequence to start X. Later on, if I need it, I want to start the GUI (Xfce 4) with a single command (startx?). Simple enough, isn't it?

Re: Starting X ad libitum.
I know the startx command starts the GUI. My question was how to disable the automatic running of X. I do not want X to be run on my system.

Disable X at boot time so that the system boots in text mode
Hi: When the booting sequence ends I find myself in the GUI, where a login prompt is presented me (Debian version 9). I would like to change this and be able to start X by myself if I like to do it. Any way to accomplish this? I presume it is in one of the scripts started by inittab that X is called...

Thanks. By the way, can you tell me the sentence "You are not subscribed to any forums in my control panel" what does it mean. All I can do when posting is to check the box "Notify me when a reply is posted".

Re: Error: Compiler is not functioning correctly.
Will the command 'apt-get install gcc' install the compiler? But I have a feeling that I need a lot of more things installed too in order to compile and link mplayer.
