Re: Is there an DE that will show root in the file manager?
We've drifted pretty far from the original topic. drift away... Concerning the original question: XFCE of course. Mousepad, Thunar, xfce4-teminal all ship with a proper polkit policy file and use root unique theming with a warning banner, like they were made to properly handle the job. The user nee...

Re: getting boot output using only HDMI monitor
I would like to see the output while my system (details at bottom) boots when the monitor is connected only with an HDMI cable. Have you tried it with the DVI disconnected? The initial boot screen doesn't have anything to do with any OS, or grub. I have mentioned before a particular monitor that wo...

Re: [Solved] Install VirtualBox or Virt-Manager
- Give it at least 4096MB RAM, it would be slow or painful if your host has less than 8GB unless you're installing a really lighweight distro Yes, 3 out of 4 is often good. Noob's often give them vm the whole farm. More cpu cores if not necessary is usually worse for example. Notes on memory - Memo...

Narrow it down to a particular question about Debian and maybe we'll get somewhere.

Re: [Solved] Install VirtualBox or Virt-Manager
My apologies for not mentioning that earlier. In hindsight, any how-to should probably start with this detail. I wouldn't know if laptops default to disabled and why that would be. Workstation/server (Xeon) motherboards are default enabled as far as I know.

Re: Sharing space for the Mint. Virtual Machine for Windows (Full-featured)
Moved to Off-Topic since it is mostly a random rant. Welcome to Debian Unamelable Linux is a large ecosystem that ranges from simple to strange. This may take some time. If you are unwilling to adapt to how linux works it won't go well. Some distro's try to hold your hand and make the transition as ...

Re: [Software] i386 install (not download) progress very slow
Could this be a AMD compatibility issue? It seems the i686 code base is becoming less and less optimized as we go forward away from native code. I use fewer instances of it now since I noticed less advantage a few years back and now maintain only one image for ancient computer testing and wine32. On...

I think that is as heavy as it gets!
Just saying, tcl/tk is glorious. Tickle! By far the fastest to method to an end result. And mostly DIY.

Re: [Solved] Install VirtualBox or Virt-Manager
There is a subject we kinda skipped, I did start out with Ultimately, qemu/kvm/libvirt is a superior host for any purpose if you give it the hardware to do the job. There are the virtualization extensions in cpu's and the particular architecture of the host that likely not only make a difference but...

i prefer text documents so i can open them in word or other text program so i can use the search function to search for key words man ps > ps.txt Then open ps.txt in your preferred text editor. Of course there are crude and cryptic keystrokes to search in the terminal as explained in man man man man

Re: display clock recommendations
I don't want the encumberance of a bunch of desktop environment libraries, but something that is build for a lower level widget set. It is an amazing omission in one sense but if graphical X11 is the requirement then we need some kind of back end to run on like qt or gtk or ncurses, so going to ent...

Re: [Solved] Install VirtualBox or Virt-Manager
Maybe not finding where to boot from or perhaps trying to boot from the iso file You could check the boot order in the vmm - vm settings? Sound like booting from hard disk is correct and if it fail, the install failed. In case you did a full install with a DM and DE then use the vmm menu to 'Send K...

Re: [Solved] Install VirtualBox or Virt-Manager
Still the same black screen! When you 'Open' the vm you should get a window with a title "$domain on QEMU/KVM" Is that the black screen you speak of..type of? If the whole screen goes black, something else is amiss! If you are referring to a blank window, did you hit the play button? You ...

WOW! Now I see the installation screen as usual. Good. Perhaps the goal of the thread has been reached! From here we may not need a play by play. There are hundreds of pages here to search for the minutia of issues that will crop up. The best thing now is to use it, make errors, notice things...lea...

Re: Unknown process.. I cant find an answer on google, duckduckgo or anywhere.. "uas"
when i get a process i dont know if its good or bad, i want to kill it in 5 red seconds just to be on the safe side. That's the exact wrong thing to do. Regardless of your years of experience you first want to learn the many things you don't know, like from reading a man page, and then stop assumin...

Re: [Solved] Install VirtualBox or Virt-Manager
Appears to me everything installed correctly. Good Just to be sure, do I need to add user to any group, play with whatever permissions? Well I did lay that out above and my current answer is no. If you have user rights through polkit it will work without 'group rights' Understand polkit vs. groups ...

root@HPdebian:/home/limo# sudo apt install qemu qemu-kvm qemu-system qemu-utils -y There are a lot of why's in that reported failure ! ? I gave the formula I actually just used: +virt-manager(+26)+qemu-system-x86(+21)+qemu-utils(+1)+libvirt-daemon-system(+9) So convert that to an apt install line: ...
