Re: Manually set up encryption [SOLVED]

With "a password when the system boots" do you mean grub password? It is not very safe. I made and added a key to the swap partitions. I can see it with luksDump. I edited /etc/crypttab to use the key file but is not working. cryptsetup --test-passphrase -v --key-file /root/key luksOpen /d...

Re: Manually set up encryption [SOLVED]

mm3100 wrote: 2021-08-31 14:58 It needs password to unlock / and /root. Since they are 2 different encrypted partitions.
It asks the password for / and swap, so not for /root.

Is there a way to type the password once?
It is the same for all the 3 partitions.

Re: Manually set up encryption [SOLVED]

I reinstalled the system with manual partitioning without lvm.
I have 3 encrypted partitions: /, /root and swap.

Why does it ask the password twice? Is it normal?

Re: Set default startx's DE

Yes I get the idea to how make a ~/.xinitrc file, thanks. So I can start a specific session for a user. You don't, at least not directly. You want to change the xsession default. Try this: # update-alternatives --config x-session-manager Appologies if I have it wrong; it's been a long time. Nice so ...

Set default startx's DE

How can I change the default startx's DE?

I don't have the files of man startx:
$(HOME)/.startxrc
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sys.startxrc
$(HOME)/.xinitrc
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
$(HOME)/.xsession

Re: Build GNOME 40 on Debian 10

Code: Select all

apt upgrade -t experimental gnome*
Is that the best way?
I can try on the VM.

Add shortcuts to nautilus

Is it possible?
I tried this https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GNOME/ ... om_Scripts but it didn't work.

The nautilus devs don't support it: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/326.

Re: Adding another superuser to the kernel

I set the group to 0. I didn't have full admin rights and I had to type twice the passwords as soon as I was logged in for network manager (?) and something else. I set the uid and gid to 0 and I had full admin rights. This entry allows bob and all the other members of the group operator to gain acc...

Re: Adding another superuser to the kernel

Giving another user uid 0 doesn't seem a good idea to me.
Is that what you mean?

Anyway I want to have a kernel which treats a specific non-zero uid as root, and with an uid bigger than 1000.
Instead of giving full admin rights.

How would you give full admin rights to a normal user?

Re: Adding another superuser to the kernel

I want to have a kernel which treats a specific non-zero uid as root, and with an uid bigger than 1000. Because usually human users have 1000+ uid. So I can have an user with full admin rights, without using root. To change root uid could be interesting but all the apps and services that check for u...

Re: Adding another superuser to the kernel

I was looking for a way to add a new root with a different UID. To change root UID is always hard I' ve read on some question. What is the part that makes root admin on the kernel? Why add such a security nightmare in the first place? If you want to give another user some system admin rights, what h...

Adding another superuser to the kernel

https://superuser.com/questions/626843/does-the-root-account-always-have-uid-gid-0/626845#626845 The administrator is always uid == 0. This is coded in the kernel. It would take some coding in the kernel to change this. So does adding another superuser require some major coding? It's not just some v...

Re: Build GNOME 40 on Debian 10

I found a guide https://diegoe.be/2020/08/01/a-minimal-jhbuild-gnome-session-in-debian/. I also built the gnome-shell-extensions module. Before I downloaded the modules with jhbuild update, then with the --no-network option I built them. I used a VM with sid and I had to install also some experiment...
